The Northampton Board of Supervisors met on Monday to once again take up proposed zoning changes, including the hot button issues of Planned Unit Developments and chicken litter incineration. Over the past few months, citizens have voiced concerns over the possibility of poultry houses and litter incineration coming to Northampton. Planned Unit Developments (PUDS) have also raised concerns, mainly whether or not there will enough controls once the projects are approved. Mary Miller’s analysis (read it here) covers some of these PUD concerns.

HEINZ SOMMER: I want the accurate answers, please.
On the night that the Town of Cape Charles finally approved the budget for this fiscal year, Cape Charles resident Heinz Sommer was on hand, and he was looking for some answers. However, the three minutes of public comment was hardly enough time to get much of anything, so Sommer submitted his questions to the Town Clerk writing. The Mirror published the Town’s answers on July 5th.
On July 22. 2015 the original answers were revised by the Town of Cape Charles.
One of the questions asked was:
What is the amount of non-performing assets on our balance sheet (like the $100,000 property acquired from Foster; Nonperforming in the sense that they do not provide any reasonable income, or they do not serve any needs for the community and or are not essential for future town developments.
The original answer was:
No others-The acquired property protects the Town entrance from possible undesirable development at the town’s entrance, and it is hoped that it will provide an increased benefit in the future.
The revised answer by the town of Cape Charles is as follows:
Assets owned by the Town and not either leased out or used for municipal purposes:
- Two parcels on Randolph behind the Library, which are being held for future parking.
- Three parcels on Madison north of the park. No plans for utilization.
- One parcel on Washington. No plans for utilization.
- One parcel, southeast corner of Fig and Randolph, which is currently loaned to New Roots Youth Garden. Long-range plan is for a round-about/plaza.
- Three parcels on Stone Road adjacent to the water plant and water tower.
- A sixteen acre parcel on Old Cape Charles Road, of which a small portion is being used for two new wells. Remainder is reserved for either future well sites or rapid infiltration basins for treated wastewater effluent disposal.
- The seven lots at Fig and Randolph near the town entrance.
Editor’s Note: Mr. Sommer continues to analyze the Town’s ‘answers’ for any further discrepancies.
VEGAN Maître d’: Buddhist Shojin Ryori Cuisine
Moving into a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle does require a certain level of discipline, yet one place to get inspiration is from Buddhist monks that practice shojin ryori. The main idea of shojin ryori is to harvest only seasonal fruits and vegetables — local seasonal foods are part of the flow with nature. According to shojin ryori, the foods that grow in different seasons are also the kind of foods that nourish your body best:
ANDY ZAHN: For the Love of a Good Dog
A dog can be a great friend and if trained a true pleasure. They are wonderful for kids and can be good protectors. I believe that children exposed to pets, playing in the dirt and household germs develop anti-bodies and are healthier than those in a pure environment.
When I was very young dad had an English setter named King who was kept in a dog run way up in the back yard. I would go in the pen and play with the dog, climb the apple tree and eat apples and grapes growing on the fence wire. The dog was a pal to my dad and an excellent hunter. We put our dogs in the car’s trunk to take them hunting and return home. They were fine in there—comfortable and had plenty of air.
Pope Francis: The Green Pope
In 2013, the Pope took the name of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals, and since that time has injected himself as an advocate for not just animals, but also for the health of the planet. It was recently reported that, during an address at St. Peters, the Pope attempted to provide solace for young boy who had just lost his dog. He told the boy all dogs do go to heaven (as well as all animals), “One day we will see our animals again in eternity of Christ. Paradise is open to all God’s creatures.”

Shore Soccer: wants to start 14 – 15 fall league
Northampton is becoming one of the state’s hotbeds for soccer. The continued statewide success of John Gorman’s Northampton squad is proof that there are good things happening now, and there is much more to come. Gorman understands that this does not happen all at once, but that the championship payoff comes only after years of hard work and dedication. During the summer, some of Northampton’s future stars are beginning the work that will someday lead to a state championship as they attend John Gorman’s workout sessions.
SHER HOROSKO: Shore Beauty Never Leaves Us
By Sher Horosko
When I arrived on the Shore in the Spring of 2013, I came as a settler to a new land. I wrote about the beauty of the natural world, that is, your natural world. There is so much to love.I watched, (for a rather long time), the sword fights of the fiddler crabs.
They moved like a murmuration of starlings in a fall sky, always streaming together, back to their sandy holes. I never could surprise them. Not once. And yes, I tried.
It had been a long while since I moved in such a watery world. I drank it up. My eyes were fresh and my heart, wide open.
Historic District Review Board: Brew Pubs and Hot Dogs
There has been some level of excitement around town over the possibility of a brew pub coming to the vacant structure that sits next to the laundromat on Peach Street. With equipment on the way, and momentum building, a brew pub future was beginning to take shape—except for one thing. When Town Planner Larry DiRe went to examine the Town’s future land use map, he discovered the proposed property was actually zoned R-1 residential; that is, commercial use is strictly forbidden. What this does to cost and timelines, as well as how it affects the overall viability of the project is yet to be seen. As far as options, the project can apply for a conditional use permit (with no stipulations), or they can wait for the Planning Commission to update the map (if they will).
Smitty’s Clam Slam 2015
It’s that time again. Time for Smitty’s 2015 Clam Slam. Each year, we wonder how our harbor master Smitty Dize is going to match what he did last year, yet each time, the Clam Slam just keeps getting better and better. And this year is no different. The line up of events and music is packed with excitement. The CC Mirror staff personally can’t wait for one of Cape Charles’ all time favorites, Mercy Creek who will be performing at 2:00 on the main stage.
