Eastern Shore Spay Organization T-Shirt fundraiser: supports spay/neuter services for cats and dogs
The ESSO T-Shirt fundraiser allows the non-profit organization to continue offering low cost spay/neuter services for cats and dogs and to help stamp out the overpopulation of unwanted litters here on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.
The Eastern Shore Spay Organization purpose is the prevention of cruelty to animals by providing funds and subsidies to pet owners for spay/neuter services for cats and dogs to prevent overpopulation. Offer information on the benefits of spay/neuter for pets and outdoor domestic animals. We also work to control the population of community/feral cats with spay/neuter services.
Y-T-D we have checked in 139 cats and dogs for spay/neuter surgery. 56 of these have been paid for or subsidized by ESSO. This effort has prevented the births of 210 unwanted puppies and 780 unwanted kittens.
Buchanan Subaru “Shares the Love” with Riverside Shore Hospice
Nassawadox, VA – On Friday, April 29th, Buchanan Subaru of Pocomoke, MD presented a $7,000 check to Riverside Shore Hospice. The dealership raised the funds by participating in a national Subaru “Share the Love” campaign held during the 2015 Thanksgiving to New Year’s holiday season. The promotion directed $250 from each new car sold during that period to a local charity. Buchanan Subaru again this year designated Hospice as their “Hometown Charity” and matched a portion of those funds to bring the total donation to $7000.
The funds benefit Camp Fragile Hearts, a community outreach effort of Riverside Shore Hospice. The free camp helps 40 local children understand and process grief and loss in their lives. With the help of trained staff and volunteers, campers experience a variety of activities including age-specific group counseling, arts and crafts, a scavenger hunt, hearty meals as well as a climbing tower and a petting zoo. The one-day camp will be held on October 1st at Camp Silver Beach in Jamesville, VA. [Read more…]

TODAY: VSU Extension and the ES RC&D Present: Skinning a High Tunnel
Intensive On-Farm Construction Workshop Part 2 March 24 Birdsnest, VA
Melfa, Virginia – For immediate release. Join the Eastern Shore RC&D and Greenhouse Expert Dr. Chris Mullins from VSU Cooperative Extension as we put the “skin” on a 48’ x 30’ Zimmerman high tunnel which was constructed during our two-day high tunnel intensive workshop in April.
High tunnels, also known as hoop houses, are plastic-covered greenhouses used for fruit and vegetable production. Their unique design allows growers to extend the growing season giving farmers increased marketing opportunities for commercial fruits and vegetables. High tunnels are frequently used by growers looking to expand production as well as traditional farmers seeking to diversify operations. Backyard growers may use high tunnels to generate part-time supplemental revenue streams or year-round kitchen gardens. No prior high tunnel experience is needed.

What helped derail Northampton County’s fatally flawed zoning and put citizens back in the process? When those outside the Poultry Industry were not invited to the table who provided a bi-county forum on the “Community Impacts of Industrial Poultry”? It was as it has been since 1988, members-supported Citizens for a Better Eastern Shore.
The Eastern Shore is a haven of small town living, where watermen still till the tides and family farms carry on centuries of tradition. What an amazing rarity in today’s hectic A strong CBES membership is vital to help protect what our citizens value most. BROADWATER WINS STATE VISAA D2 CHAMPIONSHIP IN GIRLS AND BOYS TRACK
This Saturday, the Broadwater Academy boys were projected 3rd and the girls 2nd–both went to the state meet as underdogs by nearly 20 points on both sides, yet with superb performances in shot put, high jump, and the short and long distances, the Vikings were able to capture the VISAA D2 State Championship. Broadwater scored school records yesterday in the girls’ 400, 3200, 4×100, 4×400, 4×800, shot put, and the boys’ 4×800. It was a gutsy performance in not the best of conditions. It has been a great season for coaches Eric Hack, Eva Noonan, Coach Narin, Coach Beckert and Coach Gustafson, a testament to their training and dedication.
A moment of pure joy as the BA Boys find out they are champions:
