The Arts Enter Academy of Theater Arts is set to begin Friday January 20th at the Palace Theatre. This is a foundational course that introduces the basic concepts of characterization through improvisational exercises, some reading and text analysis, and scene study. During the semester, the course will focus more on the formal development of the actor’s voice, such as vocal range, improved articulation, and the ability to use the voice as an instrument. We will still be having fun theater games, but we will also be working from formal texts.
The physical aspect of acting, presence on the stage, training and development of the actor’s body to develop optimal range of movement and creative potential for the actor is also integral to the program. The elements of dance are key to this process: use of time, space, and imagination will play a vital role in our view of Movement Theater.
Once again, stagecraft will be another aspect of theater that some students may want to engage in. Last semester, our students helped with scenery construction and painting, drafting, lighting, sound, digital electronics, stage management, and production organization for both the Halloween and Christmas shows.
Performances: The spring show is “The Clam Diggers Daughter”, an original musical/dance drama. There will be formal auditions on Saturday January 20th at 10:00 am at the Palace Theater. Involvement in this show is optional for students. Rehearsals will be every Saturday at 10:00 am.
Students are expected to produce an end of the semester performance recital, which will be a scene of their choosing, either a standard text or something they write themselves. This will be discussed in class. The director’s will be taking a hands off approach, but will be there to guide the students through the production.
Ages 10 – 18
Classes are every Friday from 5 to 6:30.
