Town Council awarded Browder-Hite the grounds maintenance service contract for the next year.
The bid package contains 3 separate parts–one for mowing Town properties, one for Central Park Maintenance and the third is a new contract proposal for maintenance of the Stone Road corridor.
According to public works director Dave Fauber, the town has been cutting the grass along Stone Road, and that is the reason that work was added to the bid.
The bid for the maintenance of Central Park, including mowing, fertilization, aeration, herbicide spraying, mulching, pruning, and irrigation is $17,130, up from $15,705. The maintenance of the Stone Road corridor came in at $32,000. Browder-Hite’s bid for mowing services is $31,000, up from $24,025. The total for all three is $80,130.
Browder-Hite is also contracted for weeding and mulching of the flower beds in town at a cost of $13,250. The annual total for everything is $98,380.
Browder-Hite was the only bidder for the service.

Can someone explain to me, why the county is not mowing Stone road and why the town is paying someone else to have it mowed?
I thought my tax dollars take care of common county grounds.
It seems to me, the town and county tax payers are getting screwed!
I want a refund!
Or is there another alternative! Such as the town of Cape Charles’ supervisors trying to annex more land for higher tax purposes. I live in King’s Creek Landing and don’t want to be taxed as if I live in town.
Is this corruption of a small town?
People need to wake up!

Hi Douglas,
To answer your first question that area on Stone Rd. is actually State maintained by VDOT. VDOT only cuts a few times a year. Several years ago the Public Works Department started mowing that corridor as we wanted the entrance to town looking nice. The article here was only the proposal from the director of Public Works and Utilities. At the meeting council voted to accept all of the proposal except for the Stone Rd. corridor portion which will be reviewed again at our 6 month budget review.

Well sir, I think your priorities are screwed up! Shouldn’t you fix the reverse parking, it’s a mess. More congestion now than there ever was. Maybe the town should spend the money on the beach. A $20,000 budget for the beach is shameful. Everyone, except the town council, knows people come to Cape Charles for the little beach. Not the shops! Your quaint little town is gone. Why doesn’t the town council focus on the town and not the surrounding area, that does not belong to the town!
Maybe instead of listening to shop and B&B owners they may want to listen to the people and why they come here. I dont mean to be blunt, but focus on your town not the surrounding areas.

I appreciate your input but, the Town is working on changing the reverse angle parking. Also I beg the differ on the beach, there was a beach here when 90 % of the houses was dilapidated. People come for multiple things to do not just any one thing. As I can only speak for myself, I listen to the citizens of our town and as far as our town not being quaint anymore, I walk up and down the streets on a daily basis and rarely do I not get a hello from neighbors or have front porch conversations.
This conversation started about mowing grass coming into town, even though it’s in the county it’s still considered town edge. We do all we can do to keep our town looking nice and if it means cutting grass at the edge of town we will continue to do it.
Just a piece of advice my father offered to me, “until you walk in someone else’s shoes, don’t knock what they are doing”
I might also suggest you run for the county Board of Supervisors in the next election considering you have so much insight!
Like you said, I don’t mean to be blunt!

Any chance in convincing VDOT to rip out the grass and go for wildflowers in which case it may only need to be mowed twice a year?
Smitty Dize says
It’s possible, not a bad idea.
Thank you

Thanks for your response, Smitty! I like the wildflower idea, too! It would be lovely if only along the shoulder.
Smitty Dize says
You are welcome.
The wild flower idea is not a bad one.

Good morning sir, I didn’t know I had to run for town council to voice my opinion. However, I would like to sit down with you over a beer or two and talk about your small town business. .As you said that beach had been there for a long time. It is a man made beach. Which means it can be washed away by any storm. You know like the erosion that occurs at the north end of the beach where the town put the bike rack for kayaks or even the erosion around the apartment s.
As for your reverse parking. Hell, you guys said the same crap last year! You can’t even find out who approved it. Just kick the can down the road. You sir, have became a true politician.
There are a lot of problems in your town. Try fixing that water leak one block from the beach. If you do walk the streets like you say, you know where it is. I to have been greeted by some town people and I have seen people trashing the beach and nearby been hit by golf carts driven by children or drunks. Where sir is your police department?
I do have experience and, first hand how knowledge of how politicians can ruin a little town. I was born in Norfolk and raised in Princess Anne county, that’s Virginia beach if you didn’t know it. As I said before, focus on your town. And just because there is a grant didn’t mean you need it. As for your wild flowers along the road, that’s what we need … people stopping to pick up flowers on the road. Come on man, THINK!
I still want to sit down with you over a beer and talk. But a warning to ya, I’m not politically correct. Good day, sir. And may god bless you.
Smitty Dize says
Points well taken. My email is on the town website feel free to email me when you want to have a beer and oh by the way, I’m a waterman and merchant seaman so don’t expect me to be politically correct either.
Douglas P Luther says
Very well sir. I don’t know if we’ll solve the problems of the world, but it sounds like we’ll have a good time discussing it. I’ll get up with you soon. Enjoy your day and thanks for the chat.
