Citizen Questions Quality of Beach Care

June 21, 2020 by Wayne Creed 6 Comments

This message sent to the Mirror by a concerned citizen. Apparently, dunes were chopped off and dispersed on the beach. Below is the complaint:

I have three major questions. 1.)Without board approval, the sand with its’ grasses in the dunes was moved to our beach and now our beach is littered with hard grass shreds, seeds; a total mishandling of our funds. It is now misery to walk our beach barefoot. How much will it cost to return the Cape Charles beach sand to the smooth soft sand before Covid? What have they done to our most profitable resource?

2.) We also need more trash cans on the beach because after this past Saturday the trash is all over the base of trash cans blowing all over. Who is cleaning our beach? I do not see the town workers early a.m. changing trash as in previous years. What happened to these employees? Were they laid off?

3.) The bayfront Public bathrooms and showers are in an abandoned state. The shower floor has been laid with wood, but how about the showers themselves? Neither work. Please, take a walk down to our beach, look at the showers, and please, walk the beach, sift the sand with your fingers.

Whoever chopped of the dunes by the boardwalk did an awful job.

Also, what happened to the floating markers that showed where the “drop off” was in the water? I thought that was huge as a safety measure, especially since there is no lifeguard! And, on the access paths to the beach, there are broken railings with splinters and rusty nails!

Civilized society in America is breaking down.

That’s what it looks like in real life, what you have described there.

A useful suggestion would be to get used to it.

Civilization takes work to maintain, and people are just too busy with everything else to do that work.

So you got what you got, and thanks for bringing our attention to it, beforehand, to save us from having to travel any distance just to have a bad experience at the beach in Cape Charles.

    Wildwood, here we come!

Are the toilet facilities still abandoned? They were unusable a couple of months ago. There is no excuse for that.

I don’t know about the toilets, but I do see people using the beach as a personal toilet.
The signs, beach patrol and police officer are a total waste of $56,000.
The police just cruise the beach on the new ATV. I haven’t see the beach patrol do anything except walk the beach. The signs mean nothing to anyone. Tent are everywhere.
Big changes in Cape Charles … but not for the better.
Even local realtors are given permission to prospective buyers to use POA amenities that they have no rights to use!
By the way, Kim. Lot 8 was the site of a tragic accident where a little girl was killed. Make sure you tell the buyer that.
