Decision on Utility Sale Coming in November

October 16, 2022 by 4 Comments

A decision on the potential sale of public utilities to Virginia American Water Company is coming in November. The has held two Town Hall Meetings on the sale in October, and a public hearing and special Town Council meeting have been scheduled for Thursday, November 10, 2022, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The meeting will take place at the Cape Charles Civic Center located at 500 Tazewell Avenue.

The Town Council will be taking formal action on this matter during the special meeting which will immediately follow the public hearing.

This may be your last chance to comment on the sale. You may attend in person, or submit your written comments via email to clerk@capecharles.org, or you can drop them off at the Town Hall by 4:30 p.m. on November 10th.

You still watch the videos and review more information from the October Town Hall meetings on the town website.

Repeatedly have asked 3 questions that no one seems willing to answer.

    1. How much of American Water is owned by foreign interests.

    2. If a couple of years down the road, we are all paying more for our service but, do not receive the quality and/or service improvements they are promising , What is our recourse?
    – also what are they promising-

    3. Given the water department is one of the largest departments in the town, and this sale is being made to improve service and lower cost to the town…..

What will happen to the people in the town water department.? Obviously they can not all be moved in to new positions, we are already financially challenged. It is important that these folks are all treated fairly. Seems like American Water ought to have to take them on as part of the deal. It could seem to be quite a concerning statement if they refused to do so.

Perhaps the answers to these questions will sway some of us. I hope so but I don’t understand the complete lack of transparency. Take note. Go vote.

I posted these questions on my personal Facebook page and tagged Smitty, Tammy, Paul Grossman and Adam CHARNEY. Tammy sent a quick response…

I, too, would like direct answers to these questions.

Where have these questions been expressed.? First I have seen them.
I recommend the person do two things to get these answers and more

    1) go to capecharles.org and listen to the two town halls on the subject. They were very informative.

Much of this was addressed at those town halls. Also look at ( or stop by town hall to get a copy of the working contract. ( it addresses the employee question in detail. ) They had copies at those meetings and have extra for residents at the utility clerk office.

    2) call or email john hozey town manager and he will address these and other questions in great detail. john.hozey@capecharles.org

Don’t know where this was posted or who is asking the questions but anyone in town Council is happy to answer. But John is our town manager can address these questions easily.

    Hope this helps!
