As Northampton continues to flail about, fretting over how to implement the proper kind of Comprehensive Plan that will ensure that business interests are squashed, Eyre Baldwin is a one man gang attempting to bring some semblance of an economy and jobs to the lower shore.
This week, the Northampton County Board of Supervisors approved Eyre Baldwin and Ta of Pearl LLC’s permit to open a “food hub,”, which is basically a single location that will sell and prepare local agricultural and aquacultural products.
The hub will be located on the lower shore at the old grader shed on Latimer Siding Road.
Baldwin told the Mirror, ” I have watched different food hubs pop up around the US. I have mainly watched what’s going on in the southeast. My version of a food hub may be a bit looser than others
The Grader Shed is located along the bike trail at the south end of the county, on Lattimer siding road. It’s an old grading shed where potatoes and cucumbers were graded and sold. We would like to have a farmers market, that did retail, wholesale, and
As you are aware there are many many products developed and made in these two counties. There is not a good platform that represents the bulk of whats made. This is really taking an old site, decent highway location, and creating a place that shore grown, raised, made products, can be sold.
Vendors Wanted
If you are a vendor, whether a grower, producer or on-site vendor and wish to be part of the food hub, please contact Taylor Custis at: Pearlmktesva@gmail.com.

the Baldwins, the Baldwins, the Baldwins, they get every thing like the Industrial park, what happened there, given to us by President Clinton with 10 million attached to it, the Baldwins get for #3 million and what happened, ZERO growth,. What we need is Costco to come here, the best food deals in the country, a billion dollar developer for the cement site thats up for sale, too much power for one family is not a good idea, under the Baldwins leadership Northampton remains one of the poorest county in the United States for decades, our board of Supervisors, who put them there, you guessed it.

In general, I think the Baldwins are doing a lot more good than harm for CC and I wish them well.
In the case of the loss of the park I’ll let you all in on something. It wasn’t the county’s fault that the enterprise wasn’t successful.
I managed the industrial park for a couple of years and I was part of the work group that enticed WAKO to come here.
There were serious plans to expand their operation including taking over about 2/3 of the building for chemical / medical processing of the horseshoe crab blood that they collect. This would have been a real boon to CC. High tech jobs, full training for locals, full benefits and excellent working conditions. Oh, and some hefty contributions to the tax base.
Unfortunately, one of the old boys on the BOD was adamantly opposed to the public / private partnership concept based on his principles. We’ll call him Mr. A. Rand and leave it at that.
His attitude and demeanor wrecked the entire plan. For you see, the Japanese build personal relationships, all the way to the top of their management structure. Nothing like our system but hey, they had the means and money to really put CC on the high tech map.
They were enamored of the town of CC……………….and me, of course. 🙂
Once Mr. Rand insulted them it is was all over. He considered his efforts a success but you can draw a straight line from that incident to the fire sale of the park a few years later.

This is an awesome plan! It’s sure to be a success. (Hope they will offer fish along with the oysters & clams. We need somewhere to buy fresh caught flounder!)

Another promise and a failure I’m sure. Eyre Baldwin is a crook who talks big but couldn’t do a thing without his father. He does what he wants and never has to face the consequences that any other citizen does. It’s a shame all the area wants now is tourism and trust anyone with a pea brained idea to get it. CC would have been best served to have preserved the Railroad town and created hotel boxcars & dinner cars and a great museum. No, the big money people who think they own the Shore do this crap instead. Wouldn’t trust them as far as I could throw them!

So many mean spirited comments directed toward a family that has done much for the Shore. Just look at the Yacht Center. It is putting Cape Charles Harbor on the map. The Baldwin’s have taken the STIP fiasco and turning it around. Rather than criticize why don’t you bring 3 million in capital together and make something of the property. So tired of all the jealousy. It’s boring.
Kay Phillips says
I agree with you, David. Those who want no change in Cape Charles obviously don’t remember Cape Charles in the 1970s. You would not have wanted to live here then. We don’t want to go back to the old Cape Charles. We must move forward. The only constant is change.

stop saying that the northampton board of supervisors are trying to squash local businesses..that is far from the truth..just check out articles by Mary Miller in various issues of the CBES newsletter, Shoreline, and you will get an idea of the new businesses in northampton county…Also the BOS has tried to lesson the rules from the Bay Act and state rules that hinder local businesses…I assume in these cases there is only so much you can do, but they have tried .. Also seems like the BOS have been super friendly to Eyre Baldwin and his ideas..so pay attention..the Northampton County BOS IS business friendly…
Guess you think Accomack county BOS is better…well, we will see about their choices of business friendly chicken barns when our aquifer goes dry..and the sad part of their choice is that Northampton citizens, who were, of course, not consulted re this decision…….will run out of water as well…….thoughtful planning is of the utmost importance….and the Northampton BOS is doing this. Remember ….at each Northampton BOS meeting ….citizens can be heard….and where are they? If people w ant to show up and criticize, this is the time to do it…in front of the board. So please publicize this opportunity instead of grumbling..Besides there are elections coming up…and the grumblers are free to run for a position on the BOS.
Note: Northampton–where humor goes to die. Oy-vey.

This is a great idea and an asset for the county.
It takes vision, guts and hard work to open a business.
Few folks have that combination.
I will stop by and support this local business at every opportunity.

Looking forward to it! Chef Amy is fabulous, can’t wait to pick up dinner on the way to the Shore.

This sounds like an exciting opportunity for vendors and buyers on the Lower Shore! Anyone who has been involved in projects like these knows that they are a labor of love. Thank you to the Baldwin family for continuing to take risks and pursue opportunities to enhance the Lower Shore — all the while trying to preserve its history and maintain its unique charm and character. Looking forward to being a patron of this new venture!
