Hi I’m really concerned about the trash problem in all our counties here on the Eastern Shore. Seems the County Supervisors are not addressing this issue. Why is that? I
It’s time to let the county supervisors know that there are residents here on the Eastern shore, who pay taxes and maintain their homes and property and who truly care about our habitats and coastal areas.
We see this as a red flag issue. The problem is not getting better it’s getting worse. I have been charting things down for years now, and I am watching what’s happening all over.
The trash on all the roads needs to be picked up more often. I realize that the trash on roads are picked up by different departments and different counties however this is the real problem–we need to educate these people on what they need to do with their trash.
All these county supervisors need to take a drive and look at what everyone is doing. They are all throwing their household trash right out into their yards and leaving it there for years.
I saw one house that had trash right up to the house rooftop. The whole yard was covered with household trash and things that you take to a dump. It is not just a few houses it’s almost every single home now.
And when they do pick up the road trash, it’s only a few rural roads and always on route 13. Not very often at all. We are becoming the Atlantic dump grounds. The Atlantic vortex for trash.
My saying now is this. If you see trash starting to come down your road…this is a sign of a dumping ground. I truly would like to see you address this in another article and keep them coming!
I am trying to reach out to anyone, and everyone who cares. We need to get people from every county together to make sure that our supervisors are addressing this ongoing problem. I have already called county supervisors about this issue. I called V-DOT. I was told it’s a policing issue and they cannot police the people.
I informed them that I felt they could pick up the trash more, do a better job at it not just a few roads, as many need to be done. I asked them how often do you pick it up? They would not answer that question. She told me it was a policing issue that they could not police the people. I am even going to make attempt to call Tyson and Purdue.
I am far from being a prejudiced person. However, it seems like the immigrants coming here are living in homes that throw their trash in the yard. These people work for those companies (Purdue, Tyson). Others are working on farms. It doesn’t matter who they are it’s about who’s doing it?
No one should be trashing the Eastern shore or anywhere! When it came to Tyson and Purdue, whatever happened to their volunteers that were supposed to go out and clean up all the trash. Where is Royal Farms in all this? All the small businesses and large businesses? They can do their part.
Most of the trash is coming from the people that work for them and the people that are using their businesses. Why don’t they put a sign outside their nurseries and companies, “Please do not litter”?
Where are all the litter containers that used to be outside these businesses in stores? They don’t put them out because they get overfilled and no one wants to go out and keep emptying them all the time. Why are there are no signs along the roads about lettering and fines for doing so?
There need to be consequences!
I told my husband that this summer I may go out on route 13 and even hit some back roads. I will have a sign on my back saying, “ YES! I’m picking up your trash! Your trash!”

Its not a trash problem so.much as a people problem.
Some people gave no respect for the planet..

I have about a half mile of road frontage on Seaside Rd. I carry a plastic grocery bag every day when I walk my dogs and pick up almost a bag full every day. Do appreciate that the jail crews do a nice job of cleaning up. Especially annoying are tires thrown in my woods.

bring it to work and put in large container. there..if go by factory bus…

Instead of going after traffic violations
Maybe concentrate on those who are responsible for littering
You hit enough people in the wallet and it usually gets the message across
Plus the added revenue

BINGO!

This is exactly what needs to be done.
Fine or jail time.
They also should have to go out and clean up the roads for at least one months time.
Every day for six hours.
That should stop them all.
I think there should be a volunteer committee that goes out 24 hours a day on the look out for people who litter.
This committee should be able to take pictures of the people and their vehicle plate numbers and report it to the sheriffs were they will be arrested.
I agree the Eastern shore is so beautiful and we must do something about this trash problem.
I also think that people need to be educated at workplace is about trash problems.
I also think that people need to be find after homes for throwing trash in their yards.
Many homes should be condemned that are full of trash and non-livable.
I see multi families living in small homes this becomes a huge problem with trash.
Yep they have $40,000 trucks and cars!
Yes I am angry at the source of this problem.
I am disturbed that officials are not doing anything about it.
How many years has this been going on?
People speak out we need your help!

I like the step forward of fines, 3 hour education course on littering and possible jail time. Then they also need to go out with the other people who have been arrested for littering.. As a crew pick up the trash 6 hours daily for (First fine) $500 and one month trash pick up. (2nd fine $800 and (2 months pick up trash) 3rd time fined $1,000 and 3 months picking up trash. Jail time for repeat litter offenders. They also need to spend one hour educating schools, businesses etc. on littering problems. Have them (as a crew)
Attend a 3 hour course on littering, so they can teach it as part of them not following the law on littering.
Inspectors should fine people at their homes and businesses for yard trash being exposed or in view.
People who obtain government assistance and housing should be made aware of this ongoing problem and that they will lose all government benefits for abuse of this tras problem nature.

Maximum fine allowable by law mandatory, donate the proceeds to the police department moral fund. If the entire amount cannot be paid, do it just like all other fines, monthly payments or loss of driving privileges. Trash on the road such as bottles can impact safety. Low income, no income, has nothing to do with making the decision to role a window down and toss trash out. Why mess around. Make littering on the shore what it is to speed in emporia. Police need a moral fund anyway, I can’t think of a better way to give them one. Problem solved.

Who do you think is doing it?

I feel that you’re going about this in the complete wrong way. What do you expect any of these agencies do? Follow their workers home and discipline them at their house? Do you expect them to do a stake out? No. Their not. Find out who owns these properties that have trash and call the county on them. That HAS to be a violation of some kind… right?

If they get people out there to take pictures and give addresses, they have plenty proof. Where are the inspectors.? Many of these people are in need of serious psychological help. They are living in unhealthy environments and homes are not fit to live in. I saw rats all over one house when I was driving by. This affects all of us here on the Eastern Shore in one way or another. I think it is a serious health issue and environmental problem that as residents who care, should sit down and address our concerns to agencies who will visit here to actually see for themselves! Also starting to put forward fines or have them pick up litter daily for three months will be a start. Maybe people need to knock on the doors to ask these people what they are doing with their trash and tell them they will be fined or have to serve time on a litter patrol for 3-6 months with no pay. Fines could go into a work group for this new litter patrol agency.

I was told by Congress woman office that she cannot address this trash problem on Eastern shore as it is out of her jurisdiction.

Law and order
Where are the signs that enforce fines for littering?
I do agree we would probably see more revenue for littering fines than that of traffic. Though the Eastern Shore has a serious problem of speeders as well. Especially commercial trucks running red lights due to going 20 miles over the speed limit. Sit at the Royal Farms intersection on Route 13 and see how crazy fast people drive through that intersection. If your on the opposite side waiting for the light to change, your chances of getting hit by on coming traffic is extremely high.
So much revenue to be made here on Eastern Shore with litter and traffic fines.
Lisa says
IT IS ABOUT TIME OUR COUNTY REPRESENATIVES FIX THIS HORRIBLE TRASH PROBLEM. I cannot believe people who live just outside the Eastern Shore look at our area and say so many terrible things about it. I was in a hair salon in Virginia Beach and heard a woman talking about the trash problem here. Sit back, and think about it. How many years has this been a problem? I say we have the wrong people in the positions who are suppose to address this, and fix this disgraceful problem. As of today, nothing has been done. Nothing! I am thinking about writing to the Environmental Association and possibly a letter to a few celebrities who would bring this to a highlight like the media. I am thinking Ellen Degeneres would address this on her show!

Blue Hoss says
Plenty of fingerprints on those trash. They do not really want to do anything about it or they would.
Lisa says
Why is that? Why don’t your elected officials care about you and those Who are extremely unstable and do this?
Margaret says
Blue Hoss,
Why do you think that they don’t care? Are you talking about the people or the people that we elect that God is looking down on to see if they’re doing their jobs?

But behavioural scientists did something better in the 2011 Copenhagen study that reduced littering by 46%.
They placed green footprints on the ground, pointing the way to the nearest garbage bin. Simple, low cost, effective Behavioural Design.
India, though is a different story. Usually there are no trash bins in public places, because the trash bins get stolen by people who sell it to make some money, even though they are fixed to the ground with screws. Everything in India has re-sale value.
So Briefcase has created a Behavioural Design solution in the form of non-stealable, waste-segregated, long-lasting, low cost, low maintenance, all weather, endorsable trash bins. But unfortunately, the local government authorities here in Mumbai – the officers from BMC, aren’t interested because of apathy. How can we change their behaviour? Can you help us?
Paul Plante says
Probably not, given we can’t seem to be even able to help ourselves over here, which is why every time someone here has a problem, they have to get help from a call center in India, where incidentally, the people always so sound polite, which I personally appreciate givcn the lack of it over here, which is why there is this massive trash problem, nobody follows the rules, even in bowling.
