Mason Ave Parking Proposal: 15mph speed limit, all trucks, and large vehicles banned from parking

February 13, 2022 by 18 Comments

The Town of Cape Charles continues to move ahead in its effort to change reverse-in parking spaces with head-in parking spaces.

The Town submitted a Design Waiver Request to VDOT last August 2021, however, VDOT responded that they consider head-in angled parking more hazardous and requested that the Town address several safety issues.

As part of the new ‘safety’ plan, the Town proposed reducing the speed limit to 15 mph from Peach Street to Harbor Avenue and prohibiting trucks of all kinds (including vans and SUVs) from the angled parking spaces. VDOT, for ‘safety’ reasons, likes the idea of restricting parking on the north side of Mason Avenue to passenger cars only. According to the VDOT, it would improve visibility and would alleviate safety concerns.

Parking for trucks, SUVs, and minivans will be located on the south side of Mason Avenue, the municipal parking lot south of Mason Avenue, side streets north of Mason Avenue (Peach, Strawberry, Pine, and Harbor), and Randolph Avenue.

Town Council will review the proposal at the next Regular Meeting this Thursday, February 17th.

If they make it no trucks or suv then you should ban non truck or suv from parking in any of the public parking lots so the trucks suvs and vans will have a place to park. More hair brain ideas from people who move to cc and get on these boards. Not to mention most of the tourists that visit cape Charles are in suv and trucks.

SUVs come in all sizes. Ford Escape, basically a car, to a Yukon XL with hundreds in between. How is that determination going to be made and by whom? Could be quite difficult codifying, explaining on a sign and enforcing this.

The simplest thing would be to make Mason Avenue one way, and Randolph one way. There are many streets, in many cities, that are one way, so I don’t buy the argument that Mason cannot be one way because of the fire station. Eventually, that fire station is going to be moved anyway, right? The more complicated they make the parking, the more difficult it will be for tourists to figure out. If you think tourists get upset for being ticketed because they pulled into a space now, how many more will be upset for being ticketed for parking their pick up or SUV on Mason north? If Mason is one way, then the problem of those big tractor trailers passing each other on Mason goes away. This has been suggested before and a different reason, aka excuse, is given each time why this would be a bad idea. Why? Who benefits from the proposed parking changes, and who would be impacted if Mason Avenue were one way?

The fact that your listing yourself as a “come here” should really limit any say you have on what happens in the town. I’ve lived in this town when no one ever thought it would become a tourist destination. Was such a better area before “come here’s”tried to control everything.

Leave it alone it’s fine the way it is!! For the person who said make Mason Ave and Randolph Ave one-way streets how do you expect that to help in anyway shape or form? For us who have a house on Randolph we have enough traffic from cars coming into town and then have cars take up all of our parking in front of our homes 😡😡😡😡..making Randolph Ave a one way is a terrible idea!!

You can’t fix stupid in Cape Charles! … but I’ll try (again).
I will donate 2 gallons of Black and White paint, roller pans, rollers. Black paint to cover current parking lines. White paint for new painted lines for the old parking lines( before the bull crap of verse parking was permitted). A hacksaw to cut off the verse parking signs and all the beer you can drink at Kelly’s Ginger Hut, after the job is done.
There I solved the parking problem in town! And I also reduce the stress for locals trying to back in. I solved the frustration level for tourist waiting for someone to try to back in park and at the same time reducing the traffic congestion. I also created more revnue for the town by creating more business for a local merchant.
That my friend is how you solve a problem created by the town council!
The town council has gotten too big for its britches!
If the town council continues with their Hunter Biden tactics … the town is domed

Those businesses won’t get their packages either because I guarantee that my husband who works for FedEx and drives a large truck/van, won’t walk a country mile to deliver them. You will be allowing golf carts to take over and pushing more people out who have been supporting those businesses owned by locals and some “come here’s.” No packages/supplies – No buying from large vehicle owners = No business.
