A new garden center is coming to Cape Charles. The grand opening of My Backyard garden center is slated for March 18. According to owner Benjamin Lewis, the primary impetus for opening is to fill the void left by Appleseed Porch and Garden’s closing.
The location will be in the old Meatland parking lot at the corner of Fulcher and Randolph. Work cleaning and prepping the ‘corner’ is already in progress.
My Backyard will be a full service retail garden center, offering shrubs, trees, perennials, herbs and veggies, all sold in various seasonal rotation. It will also offer potting soils and conditioners, mulches, and limited amounts of fertilizers and garden sprays. Over time, garden and home themed art pieces / items of interest will also be included.
“My Backyard will start out small. In reality, this will be a “pop up nursery. Our season will run from March 18-Oct 28. We’ll be open Tues-Sat 8-4 and Sunday 1-4,” Lewis said. “We’ll be offering a (we think) exciting service called “My Backyard to Your Backyard.” In essence, we’ll offer shoppers the option to have their purchases delivered for a flat fee in-town. Out of town shoppers will be quoted by the mile. Additionally, we’ll offer installation services to compliment the delivery option. “
Gina Goffigon, formerly of Appleseed, will be the day-to-day manager. Lewis is currently hiring part time garden and plant lovers to fill the schedule.
The bulk of the plants will be purchased locally (Tankard’s, David’s, Ivy Farm,ect.). Additionally, the paver line we’ll be featuring is Eagle Bay, a Richmond based firm.

Super news! I was afraid Northampton had lost another business.

Looks like they won’t have to hook into the town water – so they’re already ahead a couple thousand dollars.
Wishing you the best of luck!
