The New Roots Youth Garden’s fall session will be starting soon and will held Thursdays from 5:00-6:30 p.m. from September 22nd to Oct. 27th. The garden is located at the corner of Fig Street & Randolph Avenue in Cape Charles, next to Rayfield’s Pharmacy. Participation is free and children ages 6-12 (or 5 and under with an adult) are welcomed to attend as many weeks as their busy schedules will allow.
Along with gardening in the fruit, vegetable, herb and flower beds, there will be experiential learning activities such as planting a garden in straw bales, cooking, using nature in creating art, composting, and making bird feeders. Special guests from the Eastern Shore Soil and Water Conservation District, local art galleries, Appleseed Porch and Garden, and the Nature Conservancy will be visiting with the children throughout the season. To promote good health and fitness the children will also learn about nutrition and have fun with hiking scavenger hunts, yoga, relays and other fun activities to get them moving.
We are always looking for volunteers for our many programs, events and site projects- if you are interested in community gardening and working with children, please send us an email at HelpNewRootsYouthGarden@gmail.com.
