Pet of the week: Meet Cooper.
The phrase “Gentle Giant” is a good way to sum up Cooper’s personality. This friendly Labrador Retriever mix, about a year and a half old, weighs almost 80 lbs. That’s pretty much the weight that you’d expect in a full grown Lab, but depending on what breed the mix side of his ancestry is, he may even grow a bit more over the next year or so. In any event, it’s safe to say that he’s going to be a big dog.
Cooper is very energetic, but fortunately he’s very gentle too. He’s also smart, and he’s slowly but surely learning some manners which make him a joy to be around despite his size; otherwise most people would probably have a hard time keeping their balance if he bumped into them with his full weight. Cooper loves everyone, and he should be great around children although, because of his size, a home with toddlers or small children might not be the best fit for him. But older children should be fine around him.
He likes other dogs and would probably enjoy the company of a doggie brother or sister. We don’t know for sure how Cooper is around cats, but when some of the neighborhood cats stop by while he’s out in the exercise yard, from inside the fence he doesn’t show any aggression toward them. With his gentle nature, he’d probably be fine living with cats too. Certainly we’ve not seen anything in his personality to make us think he’d regard them as either prey or toys, so whether they’d get along would probably be up to the cat.
Cooper is fairly clean in his kennel, but his forever family will need to be prepared to undertake housetraining him. However, if you’re willing to undertake that commitment, you’ll be rewarded with a delightful new addition to your family who would love to share years of fun and adventures with you.
This big lovebug is negative for heartworms, and he’s up to date on all appropriate shots and vaccinations, so he’s ready to become part of his furever family.
To request an adoption application, either email shorespca@gmail.com or stop by the shelter to pick one up between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
