Riverside Cancer Center earns Outstanding Achievement Award

March 12, 2017 by Wayne Creed Leave a Comment

Riverside Shore Cancer Center Earns the Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. This award recognizes cancer programs that achieve excellence and provide the highest quality care to cancer patients.

ONLEY, Va. – Riverside Shore Cancer Center (RSCC) recently earned the 2016 Outstanding Achievement Award by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC). Riverside Shore is one of a select group of 22 U.S. accredited cancer programs to receive this national honor for surveys performed July 1 – December 31, 2016.

Every three years Riverside’s cancer program is evaluated by the CoC on 34 standards of performance. The standards include leadership, clinical services, patient outcomes, data quality and data management. In 2016, the program once again received high marks on all 34 standards.

In addition, seven of the 34 standards were eligible for commendation, and Riverside was awarded commendation in all seven standards, resulting in full accreditation with gold standard commendation. Of the cancer programs that received commendation in all seven standards, a select group was chosen for the Outstanding Achievement Award.

RSCC was the only program in Virginia to receive the CoC Outstanding Achievement Award in 2016. Riverside Shore also earned the Outstanding Achievement Award after its last survey in 2013.

The purpose of the award is to recognize those cancer programs that achieve excellence in meeting the CoC Standards; to encourage cancer programs to raise the bar on quality cancer care; and to share best practices among cancer programs so that patients at all cancer centers can benefit.

“We are honored to be recognized for our service to the Shore community,” said John Peterman, Administrator and Vice President at Riverside Shore Memorial. “This award once again validates that our patients are getting world-class cancer care without ever having to leave the Shore.”

Accreditation benefits Riverside’s patients by ensuring leading edge services and equipment, a multidisciplinary approach to treatment, clinical trials and new treatment options, access to prevention and early detection programs and quality care in a close-to-home setting.

Part of Riverside Health System, Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (RSMH) and its sister facilities are frequently recognized for their accomplishments. Most recently, RSMH was named one of the top 100 rural and community hospitals in the United States. Earlier, it earned accreditation by DNV GL – Healthcare for quality and patient safety. Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center earned the 2016 Bronze – Commitment to Quality Award from a national long-term care organization.

RSMH also recently opened new facilities that will further extend its ability to deliver world-class care in a local community setting. Completed on February 25, a state-of-the-art $85 million Riverside Shore Health Services campus includes RSMH, RSCC and the Riverside medical offices for specialty physicians as well as outpatient physical therapy.
