Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital Earns Echocardiography Accreditation

June 25, 2017 by Wayne Creed Leave a Comment

ONLEY, Va. – Riverside Health System announced that its Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital (RSMH) facility has earned accreditation from the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in Echocardiography in the areas of Adult Transthoracic and Adult Stress.

IAC accreditation is a ‘seal of approval’ that confirms for patients that the facility provides consistent quality patient care and a dedication to continuous improvement. IAC accreditation is valued and supported by organizations such as the American Society of Echocardiography and the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography.

“RSMH is mission-driven to provide great quality services to our Eastern Shore community,” said Eric Kirkland, Director of Cardiopulmonary, Vascular and Rehabilitation Services. “This accreditation was based on an intensive evaluation process, and it is quite an achievement to have met the high standards set by IAC. It is always gratifying to have an independent third party validate the good work that we do.”

Echocardiography uses ultrasound waves to evaluate the action of the heart and can detect heart disease or signs of serious cardiovascular conditions. It can also be called an echo test or heart ultrasound, and it takes pictures of the heart in motion to determine what causes heart murmurs, heart attacks, rheumatic fever, unexplained chest pain and more.

The test is non-invasive and painless and will show the size and shape of the heart, how well it is working, what areas are weak or malfunctioning, and if there are any blood clots.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, followed closely by stroke as the fourth highest cause of death. On the Eastern Shore, local access to quality diagnostics for heart disease is a major factor in catching disease early and keeping patients healthy.

RSMH and other rural Riverside facilities are consistently recognized for their commitment to quality and excellence. Recently, RSMH earned accreditation by DNV GL – Healthcare for quality and patient safety, while Riverside Shore Cancer Center was granted accreditation with commendation for excellence by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons. Earlier, Riverside Shore Rehabilitation Center earned the 2016 Bronze – Commitment to Quality Award from a national long-term care organization.

RSMH also recently opened state-of-the art facilities that will further extend its ability to deliver world-class care in a local community setting.

Completed on February 25, a new state-of-the-art $85 million Riverside Shore Health Services campus includes Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, Riverside Shore Cancer Center and the offices for the specialty physicians of Riverside Medical Group as well as outpatient physical therapy.
