Shell Ladies Offer Patriotic Vision of the 4th

July 5, 2020 by Wayne Creed 7 Comments

For most Americans, the Fourth of July is going to look a lot different this year. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, many cities and states have decided to cancel their annual parades, festivals, and fireworks displays, along with closing picnic areas and park pavilions to discourage crowds from gathering.

This 4th of July in Cape Charles is a case in point, looking very different than it has in past years.  There will be no vendors on Bay Ave. and the fireworks have been canceled.

Joy Pelletier told the Mirror, “Covid-19 affected the activities we are used to attending on the 4th – the parade, the vendors and capping off with the fireworks.  To try to make up for what is missing and add a festive flair to the day, we (the Shell Ladies) decided to unfurl our patriotic flag.  Monica Hullinger was the leader in this endeavor bringing us together to paint shells and plan for the display. Others involved were Nancy Wills, Lori Blewitt, Joy Pelletier, Sarah Boehling and Tracie Vandorpe.  We are all neighbors on the 200 block of Tazewell Ave….the sign which you may or may not be able to read is asking people to be gracious and not disrupt the flag until after 8:00 pm…at that time we encourage people to take a shell as a memento.  The reverse side of each has a message.”

According to the Shell Ladies, “here in Cape Charles, we are resilient and creative!Β  We will have our golf cart parade drive throughout the Town.Β  We will adhere to social distancing using masks where appropriate and we will decorate to our heart’s content. This pandemic will not keep us down!”

That display of the American Flag by the Shell Ladies on the Fourth of July will probably be considered a racist message by the BLM crowd with the Shell Ladies celebrating white supremacy in Virginia by making that flag on the beach, which will likely result in a mass of protestors descending on Cape Charles to demonstrate against white supremacy and racism in Cape Charles as represented by that display of the American flag which the BLM crowd burns.

Then to appease the mob, so they don’t loot and burn down Cape Charles, the Shell Ladies will instead have to paint more shells and arrange them on the beach in huge letters proclaiming to all the world that in Cape Charles, BLACK LIVES MATTER!

They should, anyway, although with all the black on black killings in Albany, New York and Chicago and Atlanta, they don’t seem to.
