Unlike other countries that closed borders, schools, cafes, bars, and businesses as the coronavirus pandemic swept through Europe, Sweden opted to keep public life as unrestricted as possible.
The goal of Sweden was to allow some exposure to the virus in order to build immunity among the general population while protecting high-risk groups like the elderly and those with immune deficiency.
While absorbing a large amount of criticism, the country’s chief epidemiologist said the strategy appears to be working and that “herd immunity” could be reached in the capital Stockholm in a matter of weeks.
Paul Plante says
Whatever went on in Sweden, a country with a history as a nation and a people that goes back several thousand years, and whatever the Swedes may have done or not done with respect to their fight against the “invisible enemy” as New York’s Democratic Socialist autocrat, tyrant and dictator Andy Cuomo likes to call COVID, the fact of the matter is that this is not Sweden and we are not Swedes – to the contrary, we are a divided and disorganized and now defeated people in our own country who gave up Constitutional government and RULE OF LAW in exchange for what we hope are going to be kind masters in the person of such now-shining stars in the political firmament as EL COMMANDANTE Cuomo in New York and his fellow Dictator in the Commonwealth of Virginia, EL SUPREMO MAGNIFICO Ralph “Blackface” Northam.
While the Swedes were taking public health measures to protect the Swedish population, over here, it was entirely political – a POWER GRAB, plain and simple.
Northam and Cuomo are now dictators in actual fact.
Having grabbed that power, can they now be trusted, when the crisis they have created which served as the basis for their assumption of absolute power is declared over by them, to hand that power back and restore constitutional government?
Anybody who believes that is a fool.

Here is a good article where Sweden’s architect of their coronavirus response explains their approach…
https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-020-01098-x
One reason they didn’t lock things down is that Sweden’s laws don’t allow them to do that. So they asked and suggested that people do all the same restrictions that we are doing here in the U.S. It just wasn’t a legal requirement. So while the lack of enforcement ability means their approach was a bit more slack, it is a myth to say that life went on as usual there. They were still washing hands, social distancing, spacing out in restaurants, etc. It will be interesting to study the final results, but it is too early to know.
Not every country can simply copy the approach of another. Sweden also has government-provided healthcare to provide for every one of their citizens that is affected by the coronavirus, so that makes it a bit more fair when they knowingly take an approach that infects more people.
Note: Thanks Karen. So you’re saying they didn’t destroy their economy? Now do Cape Charles.
Paul Plante says
Speaking as a public health engineer twice commended in writing by then-New York State Health Commissioner Dr. David Axelrod for my integrity in the performance of my duties and for not being swayed from them by threats of violence, this operative premise driving our response to this COVID CRISIS that has been manufactured by the main-stream media and the Democrats for partisan political reasons having everything to do with our up-coming November presidential election, and nothing to do with actually protecting the health of the public, that it is necessary to destroy America to save it is absurd, irrational, insane and quite bizarre, and it runs counter to what a true public health response in this country should have been if our public health infrastructure wasn’t broken, and thus, worthless, which public health infrastructure can be seen in outline in the Commonwealth of Virginia in Title 32.1., Chapter 2. Disease Prevention and Control, as part of the Code of Virginia, to wit:
Chapter 2. Disease Prevention and Control
Article 1. Reporting of Diseases
§ 32.1-35 List and reports of diseases and dangerous microbes and pathogens
§ 32.1-35.1 Information on health care-associated infections
§ 32.1-36Reports by physicians and laboratory directors
§ 32.1-37 Reports by persons other than physicians
Article 2. Investigation of Diseases
§ 32.1-39 Surveillance and investigation
§ 32.1-40 Authority of Commissioner to examine medical records
Article 3. Disease Control Measures
§ 32.1-42 Emergency rules and regulations
§ 32.1-42.1 Administration and dispensing of necessary drugs and devices during a declared disaster or state of emergency
§ 32.1-43 Authority of State Health Commissioner to require quarantine, etc.
§ 32.1-44 Isolated or quarantined persons
§ 32.1-45 Expense of treatment
end quotes
If one bothered to scan that list, one would find it not only quite comprehensive, but also very close to what was done in Sweden, which country followed smart public health practices, as opposed to the stupid partisan politics which are driving the response here.
You don’t protect and safeguard lives and health by making people into virtual prisoners in their homes with no end date to their imprisonment in sight while destroying their livelihoods and communities and social connections, and it is insane to think otherwise, and yet, unlike Sweden, which opted for the rational approach outlined in the Code of Virginia, we have chosen insane, instead, and once insanity takes the helm, there is no way to now right the ship.
If this had been a nation of laws like Sweden, which it now no longer is, Title 12 of the Code of Virginia, Chapter 90. Regulations for Disease Reporting and Control, 12VAC5-90-107. Quarantine, is the section of law in the Commonwealth of Virginia which dictates what should have been done to res[pond to COVID if our PUBLIC HEALTH PROTECTION SYSTEM was not BROKEN:
12VAC5-90-107. Quarantine.
A. Application.
The commissioner, in his sole discretion, may invoke the provisions of Article 3.02 (§ 32.1-48.05 et seq.) of Chapter 2 of Title 32.1 of the Code of Virginia and may order a complete or modified quarantine of any individual or individuals upon a determination that:
1. Such individual or individuals are known to have been exposed to or are reasonably suspected to have been exposed to a communicable disease of public health threat;
2. Exceptional circumstances render the procedures of Article 3.01 (§ 32.1-48.01 et seq.) of Chapter 2 of Title 32.1 of the Code of Virginia to be insufficient, or the individual or individuals have failed or refused to comply voluntarily with the control measures directed by the commissioner in response to a communicable disease of public health threat; and
3. Quarantine is the necessary means to contain a communicable disease of public health threat to which an individual or individuals have been or may have been exposed and thus may become infected.
The commissioner, in his sole discretion, may also order the quarantine of an affected area if, in addition to the above, the Governor has declared a state of emergency for such affected area of the Commonwealth.
end quotes
If one bothers to read through that, one sees it is quite calm, logical and rational and is intended to follow the first law of public health, which is that you do not create panics and sow the seeds of hysteria when confronted with a communicable disease like COVID, and further, had that law been followed, instead of discarded by EL SUPREMO MAGNIFICO Ralph “Blackface” Northam when he suspended the laws and Constitution of Virginia to assume absolute power for himself over the lives of each person in the Commonwealth, as if they were his possessions, that law provided for an actual, qualified public health official to be in charge as opposed to an unqualified political hack like Ralph Northam.
But having discarded that law, of course it no longer applies, so that instead of a rational, measured response like they had in Sweden, we have instead a real cluster****, and the most COVID cases on any country, thanks to incompetent hacks like “Blackface” Northam and EL COMMANDANTE Andy Cuomo in New York, who has been spreading COVID all over the state by shipping people infected with COVID to hospitals outside of New York City to guarantee its spread into every county in the state.
Getting back to what might have been in the Commonwealth, but for the meddling of “Blackface” Northam, we have:
C. Means of quarantine.
The local health department shall assess the situation, and in consultation with the Office of Epidemiology, shall recommend to the commissioner the least restrictive means of quarantine that effectively protects unexposed and susceptible individuals.
The place of quarantine selected shall allow the most freedom of movement and communication with family members and other contacts without allowing disease transmission to others.
end quotes
The key words there, of course, are “shall recommend to the commissioner the least restrictive means of quarantine that effectively protects unexposed and susceptible individuals,” and “most freedom of movement and communication with family members and other contacts.”
That is because of the proven deleterious impacts to one’s immune system caused by enforced social isolation which especially for older people, and I am one, is tantamount to the torture of solitary confinement in a prison.
We know from “Blackface” Northam’s order to all Virginians to get inside their houses and stay there until EL SUPREMO MAGNIFICO issues another order telling them they can come back out again that none of that ever happened.
There was no attempt to determine the least restrictive means of quarantine that effectively protects unexposed and susceptible individuals in this case of COVID – instead, all we had was Ralph Northam declaring the essence of martial law in Virginia, with him as the dictator.
Getting back to what might have been once more, we have:
J. Affected area.
If the criteria in subsection A of this section are met and an area is known or suspected to have been affected, then the commissioner shall notify the Governor of the situation and the need to order quarantine for the affected area.
In order for an affected area to be quarantined, the Governor must declare a state of emergency for the affected area.
If an order of quarantine is issued for an affected area, the commissioner shall cause the order of quarantine to be communicated to the individuals residing or located in the affected area.
The use of multiple forms of communication, including but not limited to radio, television, Internet, and/or other available means, may be required in order to reach the individuals who were in the affected area during the known or suspected time of exposure.
The provisions for documentation, means of quarantine, enforcement, health status monitoring, essential needs, and release from quarantine described above will apply to the quarantine of affected areas.
Appropriate management of a disease of public health threat for an affected area may require the coordinated use of local, regional, state, and national resources.
In specifying one or more affected areas to be placed under quarantine, the objective will be to protect as many people as possible using the least restrictive means.
As a result, defining the precise boundaries and time frame of the exposure may not be possible, or may change as additional information becomes available.
When this occurs, the commissioner shall ensure that the description of the affected area is in congruence with the Governor’s declaration of emergency and shall ensure that the latest information is communicated to those in or exposed to the affected area.
end quotes
And once again, we find those words about “least restrictive” in the law as written, to wit: “the objective will be to protect as many people as possible using the least restrictive means.”
You don’t destroy the lives and livelihoods of people to protect their health – only an idiot would think otherwise.
And yet, that is the path we as a nation chose.
Why?
Why didn’t we do like the Swedes, especially when that is what a proper public health response would have been if our laws had actually been followed, instead of being tossed in the ditch by the side of the road by Ralph “Blackface” Northam?
Publius Americanus says
Taken from Wikipedia:
“The Swedish health system is mainly effective but there are some problems within the system.[19] Increased access to primary care is one issue that arises. Most citizens in Sweden go to the hospital for routine check ups. Primary care needs to be made more readily accessible to Swedes instead of them going to hospitals for minor health needs. Another issue is Swedish emergency units are below the minimum safe size[vague]. The decentralized healthcare system in Sweden leads to this inefficiency, because of decentralization the counties are granted an extreme amount of flexibility. The coordination between counties and municipalities is affected because of this constant shifting and flexibility.[20] The primary care issues stems from councils. The government has tried to make primary private care more accessible to citizens but the city councils halt this in most counties.[21] ”
So, to minimize cost, the councils RESTRICT access to healthcare.
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, sounds like rationing to me.

Erin Harvey @ April 27, 2020 at 12:07 pm says, “Not every country can simply copy the approach of another,” and speaking as a public health engineer twice commended in writing by then-New York State Health Commissioner Dr. David Axelrod for integrity, every country is not just supposed to blindly copy what other countries might be doing, which idea is stupid on its face.
What each country is supposed to do in the case of COVID is not look at what other countries might be doing – they are each to follow their own PUBLIC HEALTH LAWS to determine their response, which is what didn’t happen in this country, because the Democrats instead turned it into another silly “GET TRUMP” game like they did with the SCHIFF IMPEACHMENT SCAM, which takes us to an article just out in Axios entitled “Cuomo wishes he ‘blew the bugle’ sooner on coronavirus” by Jonathan Swan on 28 April 2020, where we were served up this dish of twaddle by New York’s Democratic Socialist autocrat, tyrant and dictator Andy Cuomo, to wit:
In an interview for “Axios on HBO,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told me he wishes he had sounded the alarm sooner about the coronavirus.
Why it matters:
The coronavirus has now killed more than 22,000 New Yorkers, giving Cuomo’s state the worst death toll in the world — vastly worse than other dense global cities like Tokyo and Seoul.
And yet in managing the crisis, Cuomo has been widely praised, and he’s become a fan favorite for Democrats around the country.
The big picture:
I asked Cuomo what he wishes he could change about his response to the virus.
His response was revealing:
“When we heard in December that China had a virus problem, and China said basically, ‘it was under control, don’t worry,’ we should’ve worried.”
“When China says, ‘Don’t worry, I have a fire in my backyard,’ you don’t hang up the phone and go back to sleep, right?”
“You get out of your house and you walk two houses over to make sure I have the fire under control.”
“Where was every other country walking out of their home to make sure China had it under control?”
“I wish someone stood up and blew the bugle.”
“And if no one was going to blow the bugle, I would feel much better if I was a bugle blower last December and January.”
“… I would feel better sitting here today saying, ‘I blew the bugle about Wuhan province in January.'”
“I can’t say that.”
end quotes
And in fact, as has already been reported on here in the Cape Charles Mirror, which seems to be the only media source that doesn’t have its head in its *** with respect to COVID, the CDC issued an official alert on COVID on 8 January 2020 to state and local health officers, state and local epidemiologists, state and local laboratory directors, public information officers, HAN coordinators, and clinician organizations, which official alert would have gone to Andy’s worthless commissioner of health, the largely invisible Howie Zucker, who responded to the alert by doing nothing at all.
So Andy can’t say “I wish someone stood up and blew the bugle,” because somebody did exactly that on 8 January 2020.
Getting back to that article and the pathetic, negligent response of New York state public health officials to that 8 January COVID alert from the CDC, we have:
But on March 2, Cuomo was projecting confidence about the virus.
He said because of his “arrogance” about New York having the best health care system in the world, he didn’t “even think it’s going to be as bad as it was in other countries.”
end quotes
What horse****!
It wasn’t so much a case of Andy’s arrogance, which is towering; rather, it was a case of Andy’s gross ignorance that had the fool thinking it wasn’t going to be as bad in New York state with its third-world, 4th rate public health system as it was going to be in other countries.
Stupid is as stupid does.
Madam X says
Does anyone read P.Plante’s comments in their entirety? Yes, you have said it right, “stupid.”
Sad.
Sorin Varzaru says
“Does anyone read P.Plante’s comments in their entirety?”
Ha. I know! You have to admit though, the man is relentless. He comments on his own posts sometimes!
Paul Plante says
Actually, Sorin, if you would take a moment to do some actual research, which I know you are loathe to do out of an innate fear bred into you when young in a repressive Eastern European ****-hole that doing research was a sign that you were attempting to think for yourself, which would mark you out for re-education through hard labor, or worse, you would find that out of some 10,000 or more posts I have made on the Cape Charles Mirror, the bulk of them, some 9347, were comments on my own posts, which works out to be a high percentage of them, don’t you think?
As to the comments of Madam X above here, I took it that she was saying that if a mature discerning reader were to take the time to carefully read down though my above post where I quote New York’s Democratic Socialist governor Andy Cuomo, who Sorin likes, making the lame statement about him wishing that somebody had blown the bugle sooner, when the bugle had in fact been blown on 8 January 2020, which inane statement by Sorin’s hero Andy Cuomo, as she clearly noted, not only makes Andy Cuomo look weak, but quite stupid, as well, which is actually the case, and a more mature and discerning reader like Madam X who is urbane and cosmopolitan enough to not get swayed and misled by the continuous BULL**** spew by Andy Cuomo trying to shift blame for all his problems in New York state over onto Trump, when the responsibility for the major-league cock-up and cluster**** belongs to Andy Cuomo, himself, which Madam X can clearly see, because she is using reason, where Sorin is using his fears and emotions as his guide, going with his gut, and doing what his gut tells him to do, which might in the end really have been a case of unrelieved intestinal gas, and so she can see just how pitifully stupid Andy Cuomo was and still is.
You, on the other side, because you are blinded by your prejudices, can’t.
If you had been able to use reason instead of passion, Sorin, the first thing you would have come across was an article just out in Axios entitled “Cuomo wishes he ‘blew the bugle’ sooner on coronavirus” by Jonathan Swan on 28 April 2020.
That was NATIONAL NEWS< Sorin, so I am unclear as to why you didn't know about.
Anyway, getting back to the news you either missed, or avoided, not being able to hear anything bad said about Andy, in that article we were served up this dish of hogwash over a bed of twaddle by New York’s Democratic Socialist autocrat, tyrant and dictator Andy Cuomo, to wit:
In an interview for “Axios on HBO,” New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo told me he wishes he had sounded the alarm sooner about the coronavirus.

end quotes
And there is where we are with you, Sorin – unlike Madam X, who clearly is a person who thinks for herself and is not a slave of popular opinion as you are, Andy is a fan favorite of yours, and you will feel disloyal as a fan if you hear anything bad about Andy, which has you closing your ears to what is going on in the world around you.
Getting back to that news you missed:
The big picture:
I asked Cuomo what he wishes he could change about his response to the virus.
His response was revealing:
“When we heard in December that China had a virus problem, and China said basically, ‘it was under control, don’t worry,’ we should’ve worried.”
end quotes
Now, Sorin, even a staunch defender of Andy Cuomo such as yourself has to admit that that statement by Andy is pure bull**** because the Chinese never said that on the one hand, and on the other, on 8 January, the CDC, the official responsible body in this country, not the Chinese, informed Andy's worthless health commissioner Howie Zucker that problems had occurred in China and to be on the alert for them coming here.
So Andy is pulling horse**** from out of his ***, as we clearly see by going back to the story you didn't read, but Madam X did, to wit:
“When China says, ‘Don’t worry, I have a fire in my backyard,’ you don’t hang up the phone and go back to sleep, right?”
“You get out of your house and you walk two houses over to make sure I have the fire under control.”
“Where was every other country walking out of their home to make sure China had it under control?”
end quotes
Where indeed!
And who gives a **** because what every other country was doing is totally irrelevant here – Andy and his worthless health commissioner Howie Zucker ****** up big time and now they are trying to shift the blame elsewhere, and are being stupid about it, as Madam X clearly saw, while you didn't.
Getting back to the news you missed:
“I wish someone stood up and blew the bugle.”
“And if no one was going to blow the bugle, I would feel much better if I was a bugle blower last December and January.”
“… I would feel better sitting here today saying, ‘I blew the bugle about Wuhan province in January.'”

And now we pause to take a station break, and after a word from our sponsors, our regularly scheduled programming will resume uninterrupted.

Paul Plante says
tokenny, dude, where the term “dude” as applied to yourself in this instance is the high honorific, you are more right than you could possibly know when you say above that “(R)espect of a person is earned,” and ever has it been thus in my long years of study of such things as an ethologist, and truly, tokenny, how could it be otherwise with respect to the concept of “respect of a person is earned,” for how else could it be honorably attained?
Is “respect” then gained by ruling with fear, as is the case with the “Prince of Darkness” Andy Cuomo of New York state, do you think?
Or does that gain him contempt and disdain by those born free in America who resent Andy Cuomo tossing RULE OF LAW and the New York State Constitution in the crapper along with his empty and meaningless Oath of Office to set himself up in New York State as a tyrant with power now over both the purse and the military forces of the state as well as absolute power over the former citizens of this state who once were free, but now no longer are?
How should a veteran of a foreign war against a ruler who ruled by fear react to that news that we are no longer a free people in this state, tokenney, which has been made into a North American version of Venezuela, with Andy Cuomo as the unquestionable ruler, like Saddam Hussein was in Iraq, and “PaPa Doc” Duvalier was in Haiti?
Didn’t we recently invade from South American ****hole because of a South American version of Andy Cuomo was in power there as a dictator?
Granada, wasn’t it?
Or Panama?
Given that, tokenny, rhetorically speaking, why should we welcome a North American version of them up here?
What are your views on that proposition?
As to propositions such as your very well-stated argument that “(B)eing a veteran of a foreign war does not automatically make you intelligent, dumb, compassionate, heartless right or wrong, it just makes you a veteran of a foreign war,” speaking as a veteran of a foreign war, I would have to say that your logic is flawless, as one has come to expect from yourself in here, hence the use of the honorific “dude” when applied to yourself as the honorific “Magnus” was applied to Hussein Obama back when.
So kudos, tokenny.
A job very well done by yourself!
That should have yourself standing tall, I would say, the next time you look at yourself in the mirror, knowing in what high esteem a grateful nation holds you!

Yes, indeed, sad and incredibly stupid, which is a real commentary on these times we now find ourselves in, that takes us back to 2 March 2020, 54 days AFTER the CDC issued a public health alert about COVID to state and local health officers, state and local epidemiologists, state and local laboratory directors, public information officers, HAN coordinators, and clinician organizations, which would have included Democratic Socialist governor of New York Andy Cuomo’s worthless health commissioner, Howie Zucker, and an article entitled “Rensselaer County Officials Working with State and Federal Officials on Coronavirus Issue,” where we were enlightened as to just how pathetically stupid the response in New York state, the epicenter of COVID in the world, really was, and how negligent and derelict Andy Cuomo and his lackey Howie Zucker really were with respect to COVID, as follows:
With confirmed cases of coronavirus in the nation and the state, Rensselaer County health officials took part in calls with the Centers for Disease Control and the New York State Department of Health regarding the issue.
At this time, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in the county.
Federal and state health officials have termed the spread of the illness nationally and in the state as “isolated” cases.
end quotes
That is on March 2, 2020, 54 days or nearly two months AFTER the CDC issued a public health alert about COVID to state and local health officers, state and local epidemiologists, state and local laboratory directors, public information officers, HAN coordinators, and clinician organizations, which would have included Democratic Socialist governor of New York Andy Cuomo’s worthless health commissioner, Howie Zucker that we were being told by Federal and state health officials, presumably this Fauci and the airhead Dr. Birx along with the worthless Howie Zucker, that the spread of COVID nationally and in the state were “isolated” cases, and how pathetically stupid and incompetent that makes these so-called “experts” sound.
Getting back to that article which really captures the incompetence and outright stupidity that is driving this nation’s response to COVID, we have:
“We want residents to know that our team at the Health Department is monitoring this situation closely and working with state and federal officials to share information and get updates.”
“However, there is no need for undue concern or worry,” said County Executive Steve McLaughlin.
“We have been informed that New York State remains at a low risk for coronavirus.”
end quotes
And now New York state is the epicenter of the COVID crisis, and Rensselaer County is not only swimming in COVID cases, but now has older people dying alone in their homes, which is quite understandable from the perspective of an older person, because who in their right mind wants to spend their last days on earth as a science experiment in one of Andy Cuomo’s COVID hospitals, and older people in nursing homes are dying as well, as COVID continues to spread, because federal and state health officials simply blew off COVID as something to not have to worry about.
STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES!
