At sites all up and down the Eastern Shore, the last bits of the Shore’s Rail history is being dug up, wrapped, and sent off on tractor-trailers. The rail ties in the best condition are being tied together with steel ribbon. Workers have told the Mirror that the best ones are all pretty much sold, but not sure where they will be going. According to one worker, they, along with the steel rails, will be dispersed to different locations.
In an odd way, there may be some symmetry here. This sturdy, tar-infused wood helped to connect the Shore and its products to the rest of the world. With their work done here, they will now venture forth, possibly becoming landscape borders, fencing, steps, retaining walls, and even benches.
