The old school food revival continues to build on Peach Street in historic Cape Charles. With Tim’s ready to bring real Eastern Shore cooking (and prices) back to town, the latest edition to the trend is the PEACH BEACH Shave Ice Shack.
PEACH BEACH Shave Ice Shack is the creation of Jackie Jones and Erin Harvey, two high school sweethearts from Richmond who now live in Cape Charles. Jackie can vividly remember when Erin returned from a childhood trip to Hawaii and excitedly told her all about the “awesome” shave ice he had there. Nothing like the crunchy snow cones they had grown up with – this was soft like snow and offered endless combinations of rich tropical flavors. Years later, as they were fixing up their home on the corner of Randolph Avenue and Peach Street, they came up with the idea to convert their tiny garage into a shave ice shack as a fun way to bring this cool treat to the locals and summer tourists.
To make the highest quality shave ice, they will be making their own large blocks of ice from filtered water and then shaving it on the sharp blade of a machine that looks much like a drill press, the same way that it is made in Hawaii. The soft snow pours out the bottom and is sculpted by hand into a small bowl. Each customer can then choose up to three different flavors from tropical options like banana, mango, pineapple, and coconut as well as more traditional tastes like cherry, raspberry, grape, and strawberry. All of the flavors will be mixed by hand at Peach Beach using pure cane sugar, filtered water, NO preservatives, and NO high fructose corn syrup. There will be a rich variety of standard flavors, including a few sugar-free ones, as well as some specials that will rotate in from time to time.
PEACH BEACH Shave Ice Shack will be open daily throughout the summer season after its expected opening in late June of this year.
