Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel- A groundbreaking ceremony is planned for Sept. 18. at 11:30 a.m. for the parallel Thimble Shoal Tunnel project. The five-year, $756 million endeavor will add two more underwater lanes to the 53-year-old link between Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore.

The Virginia Originals gift shop, Chesapeake Grill restaurant, and the fishing pier on the southernmost man-made island will close to accommodate the new tunnel’s construction.

The fishing pier is slated to reopen in October 2022 after construction is completed. Where a restaurant or gift shop will reopen is not known at this time.

Maybe we could encourage the Chef at the Tunnel Restaurant to come to Cape Charles and open a restaurant in town. His food is excellent!!
