Two major new initiatives from ESCC

August 16, 2020 by Wayne Creed 2 Comments

The first of the two new initiatives is the ESCC YES! Tuition Promise which allows eligible students to attend college without having to pay tuition and fees.

Initial Eligibility (Fall semester)

  • Full-time enrollment in at least 12 credits for the fall semester
  • In-state tuition eligibility
  • Completion of required documentation for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Expected Family Contribution of $5,712 or less as determined by the results of the FAFSA

Continued Eligibility (Spring semester)

  • All of the above criteria
  • A fall semester grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher
  • Completion of at least 75% of fall credit hours with a grade of “C” or higher

Students do not need to apply to this program. Grants and scholarships will be automatically awarded to eligible students. For more information, contact Carole Read, Financial Aid Coordinator, cread@es.vccs.edu, (757)789-1733.

STAY HOME, STAY SAFE, STAY LOCAL

The second initiative is called STAY HOME, STAY SAFE, STAY LOCAL. Through a generous donation, we are now offering 25 students a FREE SEMESTER at college!   If you are concerned or your child is hesitant to go away to school in this environment, or is wondering why he or she should pay high tuition fees to take online classes from home, ESCC offers a fantastic alternative — for the first 25 students who apply, a once in a lifetime opportunity for FREE tuition!

Our donor is very concerned about keeping our youth on the Eastern Shore healthy and at the same time helping them get a high quality educational experience that will lead to good jobs and careers.

The guidelines for eligibility for this scholarship are simple. Students who pursue this program must commit to successfully complete two semesters at ESCC. The scholarship is for in-state students who are high school graduates or have earned a GED. The student must commit to enrolling at ESCC for both Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters and must be enrolled in at least six credit hours both semesters. Completing the FAFSA is optional but recommended for the second semester. Please know that this scholarship is on a first come first serve basis.

Our donor will pay eligible students’ tuition for the Fall 2020 semester and if a student successfully completes both Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 they will be under no obligation to pay back any of the fall tuition dollars.

It has already been determined by the powers that be that this money should be made available for this program at this time. No one can put those apples back on the tree.
Be that as it may, people are having a great deal of difficulty finding their way into today’s business world. Just as it looks like like a great deal of businesses are finding great difficulty finding their way in this world. Between all the business innovations, the Chinese virus, the internet changes, the challenge and ignorance of socialism vs. capitalism, the press highlighting all the negatives and so little positives, and the higher education system themselves demonstrating for us all how corrupt they are, we are all finding out that a higher education is not always the same railway to get to a pot at the end of the rainbow. For the federal government to make this education available to some folks in depressed situations, they may reach a few people who will have the drive to pull themselves up and get somewhere financially more stable. THAT is not a bad thing. I just think it’s a good idea with a poor delivery.
Aren’t we supposed to earn it ? The business world is looking for good people who produce. Learn that lesson or go home to mommy. 75% participation of your classes and get a 2.0 suffices ? Where’s the lesson in that ?
2.0 is 1/2 of excellent. Is that a business class or a girl watching class ? 75% completion of tasks. What business accepts that and rewards employees with a bright future ? Why can’t the federal education system learn how to create practical standards to prepare students for work ?
