VIMS Seminar: Tales From the Deep Sea: Biology to Shipwrecks

September 29, 2019 by Wayne Creed 2 Comments

Unlocking the mysteries of deep-sea ecosystems can reveal new sources for medical drugs, food, energy resources, and other products. We are studying how deep-sea biological communities that do not reply on photosynthesis persist, and how new communities become established.  While conducting this deep-sea research off the Carolinas, using the world’s most advanced tools such as the submersible Alvin and the autonomous under vehicle Sentry, we discovered a previously undocumented shipwreck from the mid-18th century.
