Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper has selected local poultry grower, Dave Lovell, as the recipient of the 2016 Waterway Guardian award for his leadership through example in agricultural best management practices and his work as a bridge builder between the agricultural and environmental communities. Virginia Eastern Shorekeeper, Executive Director Jay Ford, released the following statement.
“Dave has led the way in implementing Best Management Practices on his farm to help protect our waterways. Going above and beyond he has explored manure reclamation technologies, served as a trusted advisor to conservation groups across the state and as a director on the Soil and Water Conservation District. He also serves on the Delmarva Land and Liter workgroup which has committed to the laudable goal of making Delmarva agriculture regionally neutral in importing and exporting nutrients, and ensuring nutrients are utilized in farming operations without negative environmental impacts.
Shorekeeper is committed to developing collaborative partnerships between agricultural, academia, and our conservation community to ensure our region’s farms and waters both can thrive and continue to help drive our local economy. As we look to the future of poultry here on the peninsula and the questions that still loom, one thing is clear; the solutions will be found through collective efforts between our environmental groups, our farmers, our academic institutions, and our leaders.
