Starting with the early years of Americaβs involvement with World War II, Parsons invites readers to explore the swamps and island barriers where she played as a child and to hear the train whistle rise up over Virginiaβs Eastern Shore at a time when her home was becoming a stomping ground for wartime efforts and nearby naval shipyards. More than a story of the authorβs childhood, Portrait of a Town chronicles one townβs struggle to maintain its rural character and way of life during a transformative period in American history.
