With the clouds and rain finally beginning to give way, the endless possibility of summer on the Easter Shore is finally here. For many, including full-time residents and tourists, it is time to indulge and revel in the ice cream bliss found at the best creamery on the East Coast, our own Brown Dog Ice Cream. For some though, whether they are vegan or lactose intolerant, or suffer from health problems due to dairy, Brown Dog bliss is something they have had to admire from afar. Of course, there are non-dairy ice creams on the market, but in many cases (most cases?), the products are uncreamy, have weird, jagged textures, and generally create the impression of eating chunks of freezer burn…not to mention the usually awful ‘aftertaste’.
For me, I was pretty much prepared to just do without. But then a few weeks ago, my daughter who works at Brown Dog, came home and somewhat off handedly mentioned, “You know Dad, Brown Dog has vegan ice cream now.”
“What?” I exclaimed.
“Dad, did you forget to put the batteries in your hearing aid. Miriam made a great vegan ice cream.”
“Wow! I have to try it! Why don’t you bring some home for me.”
“Give me some money first.”
After shelling out some cash, I was finally able to try Brown Dog’s non-dairy version. It is a coconut milk-based ice cream, and while it may not taste exactly like dairy based ice cream, it still had all the qualities of a good creamery product. Where some other vegan ice creams are choking attempts at a frozen custard, Brown Dog has a nice, creamy texture that held its form until the last drop was scooped out of the bowl. While the version I tried was coconut-cherry (with very simple ingredients that were not overwhelmed by the coconut base), you could easily see a delicious chocolate or coffee flavor doing just fine (hint).
With the warm weather finally here, Brown Dog’s non-dairy products will remind you of all the things you loved about ice cream, and summer on the Eastern Shore.,
Note: The folks at Brown Dog wanted to clarify; while my daughter called the product vegan, it is actually non-dairy, not vegan.
I am delighted! Thank you,Brown Dog!
Can’t wait to try all the vegan flavors, thank you for offering a vegan option Brown Dog!!!
