The Town of Cape Charles continues to make steady progress across a range of capital improvement initiatives, with updates spanning waterfront reconstruction, accessibility upgrades, pedestrian infrastructure, and public facilities planning.
Harbor Boardwalk Reconstruction Completed
Town officials report that the contractor has finished the second phase of the Harbor Boardwalk Reconstruction project, marking a major milestone in the multi-phase waterfront improvement effort.
During construction, crews identified additional structural damage beyond the original scope of work. Those deficiencies have now been fully repaired, ensuring the long-term stability and safety of the popular public amenity.
The Harbor Boardwalk serves as both a recreational asset and an economic driver, supporting tourism, harbor activity, and waterfront events.
Plum Street Accessible Parking Finalized
Accessibility improvements also moved forward with the completion of two ADA-compliant parking spaces on Plum Street.
The project has successfully passed final inspection by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), clearing the way for public use. The new spaces expand accessible access to nearby public areas and waterfront destinations.
Public Restroom Project Moves to Legal Review
Negotiations have been completed for the lease of property at 7 Strawberry Street, where the Town plans to develop new public restroom facilities.
The agreement is now under review by the Town Attorney. Meanwhile, the building owner is advancing build-out plans and associated cost estimates.
The restroom initiative is part of broader efforts to expand public amenities in high-traffic downtown and harbor areas, particularly during peak tourism seasons and special events.
Fuel Tank Monitoring System Bid in Development
In coordination with the Harbor Master, staff are preparing an Invitation for Bid (IFB) for a fuel tank monitoring system.
The system is expected to enhance operational oversight, environmental compliance, and safety at harbor fueling facilities by providing real-time monitoring and management capabilities.
