In 1989 Cape Charles was surveyed by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR) and listed as a historic district on the National Register of Historic Places. From that designation, the Town completed a Preservation Plan in 1996, revised the zoning ordinance, established a Historic District Review Board, and adopted historic district design and construction guidelines.
Thanks to grant funding from VDHR, which does not require any Town matching funds, the historic register survey will be updated this fall and winter. The updated survey will review the 1989 document and make appropriate additions and deletions to properties list in 1989. While much of the Cape Charles old town was included in the survey, sections of town, including Jefferson and Washington Avenues, were excluded. The updated survey will also amend the register and remove those buildings listed in 1989 but demolished in the intervening years.
