The former Straight Line Automotive Service shop at 401 Mason is about to become part of the Intelligentsia—that is, it will someday become Peach Street Books. The Historic District Review Board received a Certificate of Appropriateness from the property owners for renovations to a commercial, contributing structure. The cottage style filling station unit was built in the 1920s as a Pure Oil Gas Station. A three bay garage was added to the ‘cottage’ in the 1950s.
The design is considered an adaptive re-use to a book store/coffee shop restaurant, and will leverage Historic Tax Credits. It has receive part 1 & 2 State and Federal approval. According to the owners, they plan to keep the ‘industrial look’. Most of the original ‘cottage’ will be restored. The fuel tanks have already been removed.
The bay areas will have display shelving, sitting area, kitchen area and possibly a meeting room. The bay area (garage) will utilize roof top insulation which will help retain the industrial appearance. The extent tile roof will be repaired and restored to its original color.
The application was approved, with the stipulatioin that damaged roof tiles be replaced.
