CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Police Department has updated its use of the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles’ Traffic Records Electronic Data System (TREDS), a move that will significantly enhance highway safety analysis and decision-making at the local level.
TREDS, a state-of-the-art, automated data system, centralizes all of Virginia’s crash and traffic safety data. The upgraded system now includes a powerful mapping enhancement that enables law enforcement agencies to narrow crash data down to specific jurisdictions, rather than just by county — a change that will allow Cape Charles police to focus more precisely on safety issues within town limits.
The primary goal of TREDS is to provide accurate, timely and detailed highway safety information to support Virginia’s efforts to reduce traffic crashes, injuries, fatalities, and associated costs.
This upgrade gives us a clearer picture of traffic trends and crash hotspots right here in Cape Charles, and is a valuable tool that will help us target enforcement efforts and collaborate on safety initiatives that directly affect our community.
The comprehensive crash data housed in TREDS supports a wide range of highway safety initiatives, including problem identification, the development of integrated safety programs, education and outreach, and the allocation of federal highway safety funds. The system also plays a critical role in infrastructure planning and legislative decisions aimed at improving road safety.
By leveraging the full capabilities of TREDS, Cape Charles joins jurisdictions across Virginia in utilizing one of the nation’s most innovative tools for addressing highway safety concerns. State officials say the system lays a strong foundation for making Virginia’s roadways among the safest in the country.
Please help me understand, are there so many crashes in Cape Charles we need a computer problem to track and analyze them? I’ll take the job for free and keep track on a match pad and save money on the software and training, oh that’s right, no one cares anymore it’s just tax money. SMH
Cape Charles don’t need this. It’s a waste of money. The only accidents in town seem to involve golf carts. CCPD just wants something or someone to do their job for them while they get paid for sitting on their ass like they already do. Soon they will have camera tickets.
Cameras are coming, it’s “free money”, remember when we said this, I bet by the end of the year
There was a high-speed chase on 6/15 am, ending at Bay Creek. Until authorities release data, it could be construed as a local with too much horsepower and too little intelligence. Several incidents of outsiders, in recent years, evidently warrant a methodology to curb the selfish, sophomoric behavior.
Whoever recommended or approves this is a clown. It makes the police department look like fools as well as lazy.
Cape Charles continues to waste taxpayer’s money on no need projects!
Somebody needs to explain this waste of money.
