CHINCOTEAGUE, Va. — The Chincoteague Town Council will hold a public hearing next month to receive community input on a proposed ordinance governing short-term rentals in the town.
The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at 7 p.m. in the Town Council Chambers at 6150 Community Drive, Chincoteague.
Town officials said the hearing will provide residents, property owners and other interested parties an opportunity to speak before the council or submit written comments regarding the proposed short-term rental ordinance.
The complete text of the proposed ordinance is available for public review at the Chincoteague Town Office and through the Town of Chincoteague website.
Those who cannot attend the hearing may submit written comments to the Town Manager. Comments must be received by 5 p.m. on September 8 and may be delivered or mailed to the Town office at 6150 Community Drive, Chincoteague, VA 23336, or emailed to mtolbert@chincoteague-va.gov.
Short-term rental regulations have become an increasingly important issue for many Eastern Shore communities as local governments seek to balance tourism and vacation-rental activity with concerns involving residential neighborhoods, housing and municipal oversight.
The September 8 hearing will give the Chincoteague community an opportunity to formally weigh in on the town’s proposed approach before the council considers action on the ordinance.
