Congresswoman Elaine Luria and Chair of House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis to Tour Hampton Roads July 8

Recurrent Flooding, Coastal Resiliency Are Top Agenda Items for Luria and Congresswoman Kathy Castor (FL-14)

WASHINGTON – Congresswoman Elaine Luria (VA-02) on Monday will host Congresswoman Kathy Castor (FL-14), the Chair of the House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis, in Hampton Roads to tour areas affected by recurrent flooding, sea level rise, and other adverse effects of climate change.

Among the sites both members of Congress are touring include the Port of Virginia, Commander Navy Region Mid-Atlantic HQ, Norfolk Naval Station, Myrtle Park, and the Fernwood Farms neighborhood in Chesapeake.

The members will receive briefings on Hampton Roads military construction projects oriented toward resilience, the Defense Critical Infrastructure Program, Port of Virginia projects, and other related topics before attending a meeting of the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission with Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03) and Congressman Don McEachin (VA-04). Congressman McEachin is a member of the Select Committee.

The U.S. House Select Committee on the Climate Crisis is charged with delivering climate policy recommendations to Congress “to achieve substantial and permanent reductions in pollution and other activities that contribute to the climate crisis.”

The committee was authorized by House Resolution 6 on Jan. 9, 2019, and will publish a set of policy recommendations by March 31, 2020, and a final report at the end of the 116^th Congress. Its members include experts in environmental justice, coastal flooding, clean energy development, and other issues that are vital for addressing the climate crisis.
