ONANCOCK, Va. — Former model, philanthropist, and advertising executive Somers Farkas has been nominated by President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the United States ambassador to Malta.
Farkas, a native of Onancock, Virginia, is the daughter of the late Dr. Isaac Somers White and Caramine Kellam. She attended Broadwater Academy through the 8th grade before continuing her education at St. Catherine’s School in Richmond. She later earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from the University of Virginia.
Trump announced the nomination on his social media platform, Truth Social, praising Farkas as a “model, philanthropist, documentary producer, and very successful businesswoman.” Her career includes notable achievements in philanthropy and public service. Farkas previously served on Trump’s President’s Commission on White House Fellowships, where she played a pivotal role in supporting various charitable organizations. Her efforts have benefitted the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Alzheimer’s Association, Lighthouse Guild, and the New York Women’s Foundation.
In addition to her philanthropic work, Farkas has served as a trustee for the New York City Police Foundation. Trump commended her dedication to law enforcement, stating that she has “always BACKED THE BLUE.”
Farkas’s extensive background in communications, philanthropy, and public service positions her as a candidate with a broad range of experience to represent the United States in Malta. If confirmed, she will succeed the current ambassador and oversee diplomatic relations between the U.S. and the Mediterranean island nation.

Farkas’s philosophy reflects her upbringing and faith. She has said publicly that she draws inspiration from her mother’s teachings, emphasizing values such as integrity, generosity, and accountability. Her principles — “Always keep your promises,” “Stand for the flag, kneel for the fallen,” and “Dignity and gentleness should not be mistaken for weakness” — resonate with many who seek a steady and principled approach to diplomacy.
As Ambassador, Farkas is expected to strengthen economic ties, promote cultural exchange, and ensure fair treatment for Maltese Americans. About three-fourths of Maltese American voters cast their vote for Trump in the last presidential election, making them the largest demographic segment that voted for Trump. Her diverse background and commitment to public service position her as a capable and empathetic leader who can navigate the complexities of modern diplomacy where expectations are high.
