Virginia in addition to being a swing state in each of the last few elections, is an amalgamation of voter classes. Northern Virginia–closer to the DC suburbs–is mostly liberal and moderate conservative. The rural parts of Virginia tend to veer strongly conservative. This dichotomy was reflected in the results. Moderate conservatives went Marco Rubio, while the stronger conservatives went Trump.
Hillary Clinton won handily in our state, meeting her expectations based on poll aggregates, winning with 68% of the vote. Among college educated voters and blacks, key voter demographics in liberal Virginia who Bernie needed to attract, Hillary took almost all of them. Her dominance in VA may prove to be the defining moment for her campaign.
Virginia’s unique demographics make it a key state in the general election. For Hillary Clinton, it was a key state in her Super Tuesday performance.
