For Immediate Release – Featured Anglers of the upcoming Cape Charles Queen of the Bay Pier Fishing Tourney
Team “Fishful Thinking” Angle in as Front Runners for Queen of the Bay Fishing Tourney
Team “Fishful Thinking” captained by Ellen Terry of Mechanicsville has put her team as early favorites in the July 27th-30th inaugural Cape Charles Queen of the Bay (QOB) Pier Fishing Tourney. The team, three of which qualify as youth anglers, W. Pierce Terry, Cheaney Terry, and Natalie Wood, were observed pre-fishing during the 4th of July Guppie Tournament off the same Town of Cape Charles pier that will be hosting the QOB event. The young ladies of the team (Cheaney and Natalie) will be chasing down $850 in prize money along with the grand prize tiara and over $700 of in-kind prizes and trophies for tourney sponsors that include Chris’ Bait and Tackle, Shanty, Moonrise Jewelry, Timothy Smith & Sons, and Kelly’s Gingernut Pub.
The QOB is a totally public tournament with $1,000 in prize money evenly distributed among the four major divisions: Open, Lady, Special Angler, and Youth. Additionally, there is a Queen of the Bay Grand Prize Division seeded with $100 and a Military Appreciation Calcutta (unlimited cash purse).

Northern Virginia will be sending in perennial favorite, Sarah Capp, of Centreville who will be fishing with her dad, Rob Capp. Sarah is a dominate lady angler, having won the 2014 Lady Division of the Northern Neck’s Spanish Mackerel Tourney and has placed in the top 10 of the National Special Angler rankings over the last three years (her best finish being 2nd place in 2014). She comes into this tourney tied for 3rd in National Rankings. She will be tuning her game in Ocean City fishing off a head boat before arriving on Wednesday for the cat-n-mouse game to be played out at Cape Charles. The tourney features a strategic rule set that does not determine the eligible five species in each major division until the first catches by anglers on opening day, Wed, July 27th.
Eastern Shore fans will be keeping their eyes on team “Arc Angels”, captained by Janie Pease, whose 20+ person team have seven anglers eligible for 750 points that can challenge for the QOB grand prize.
Cape Charles will be backing their local “Golden Boy” Joe Gittinger whose family is serving as the Ambassador Family for the tourney. Gittinger took first place in the 2015 National Catch-n-Release tourney by scoring 13 different fish species catches off the same pier in which the QOB tourney will be competed. He will be relying heavily on the featured night fishing component of the tourney to go after sharks and stingrays. UnderwaterFishingLights.com has provided the effective green moonlight to aid these evening anglers.
Gittinger has recruited his pal, Northern Neck’s fan favorite, Travis Smith, to his team the “Pier Pounders”. Smith was the 2014 Special Angler National Champion and 2015 runner up. Smith scored a gag grouper catch off the pier last year and it may be that Gittinger has recruited Smith to keep a close eye on him during the tourney. Gittinger will also be assisting his dad, Bruce (a retired Marine), in the Military Appreciation Calcutta Division (any species eligible). (Although Bruce will also be fishing in the Open Division, he may not be assisted for catches therein.) The QOB is promoting donations from those outside the military to the Calcutta that will be handled by AFROTC Detachment 890. The current purse stands at $100 with additional matching funds still on the table by Fish Dispatch. 100% of any donation goes directly to the Military Appreciation Calcutta purse. All active serving and previously served personnel of the armed forces are eligible for the Calcutta. No additional entry fee is required beyond the standard fee for the QOB tourney.
Fish Dispatch has teamed with Chesapeake Bay Communications to provide live webcam streaming from the pier and a Live Leaderboard showing near instantaneous results as catches are recorded into the system.
Registration for the tourney is being conducted on a first-come first-served basis. Early registrants receive “Priority Passes” for entrance to the pier in situations where the number of anglers will be limited. Complete details and online registration for the tourney may be found here: http://fishdispatch.com/queen-of-the-bay.html
In person registration will be available at the foot of the pier Monday, July 25th and throughout the tournament (until sold out).
