CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The field is set for Cape Charles’ Nov. 3 municipal election, with incumbent Mayor Adam M. Charney seeking another term and four candidates competing for three seats on the Town Council. The candidate list was finalized following the June filing deadline for local offices in Virginia.
Charney is the lone candidate to file for mayor, meaning he is currently unopposed heading into the November election.
The race for the three available Town Council seats will feature four candidates:
- Kenneth R. Butta
- Craig C. Felker
- Ian Alan McDonald
- Mark L. Usry
With four candidates seeking three positions, voters will decide which three will join the council for the next term. The election will come at a pivotal time for the town as officials continue work on several major initiatives, including construction of a new municipal building, implementation of the Beachfront Master Plan, workforce housing efforts, downtown redevelopment projects, and oversight of infrastructure improvements following the sale of the town’s water and wastewater systems.
The election will also shape the council that will oversee future decisions on capital improvements, growth, tourism, housing, and long-range planning.
Other Northampton County races
Several other municipal and county offices across Northampton County will also appear on the Nov. 3 ballot. According to the certified candidate list, the races include:
- Treasurer: Nolan Thomas Rayfield and Kristin N. Willis will compete for the county treasurer’s office.
- Belle Haven Town Council: Cecil Mears Ashby is the listed candidate.
- Cheriton Mayor: Charles Kolakowski is seeking the mayor’s office.
- Cheriton Town Council: Six candidates filed: B.B. “Barry” Downing Jr., Robert Kelly Lewis, Norma P. Spencer, Terri L. Tatem, Sheila M. Traina and Matthew Yancy III.
- Eastville Mayor: Diane Leigh Crockett and Eleanor C. Gordon will face each other in the mayoral race.
- Eastville Town Council: Seven candidates filed: Frank Albano, Annette Marie Brown, John D. Crockett, Bonny W. Lewis, D. Allen Philpot, Anne G. Sayers and Logan C. Small.
- Exmore Town Council: Four candidates are running — Claudia C. Andrews, Bryon P. Heaster, Stephanie L. Lilliston and Brad W. Lowery.
- Nassawadox Town Council: Seven candidates filed: Andrea D. Fox, John W. Hallett Sr., Lisa Lindberg, Edward Dirk Lynch, Jerome W. Nottingham IV, Thomas W. Rippon Jr. and Georgette J. Press.
The Nov. 3 election will determine local leadership across Northampton County, with municipal offices overseeing issues ranging from budgeting and public safety to land use, infrastructure, and community development. In Cape Charles, the election is expected to draw particular interest as the town continues to manage rapid growth, major public investments, and long-term planning initiatives that are likely to influence the community for years to come.
About the Author
Butta is the only incumbent running and came in a distant third in 2022. Someone should check his voting record on consultants and “convenient” zoning variances and call him out on it.
Send a message to the three up for election in 2028 that there has been enough of their nonsense.
