Federal waters will close to cobia on June 20th, but the inshore season will extend to August 30th. The cobia minimum size limit is 40 inches. The personal possession limit is one-fish per person per day. The vessel possession limit, when two or more anglers are on-board, is two-fish per day, allowing only one of those fish to be more than 50 inches. The vessel possession limit applies to all vessels including charter and head boats. Gaffing of cobia is prohibited by recreational anglers. The 2016 voluntary cobia permitting and reporting system is now available and cobia anglers are encouraged to participate so that more specific information about cobia fishing in Virginia waters could be used in the regional fishery management processes that are directing cobia management along the east coast (source VMRC). Cobia can no longer be gaffed. Good work is being reported along the lower Bay and Bridge Tunnel; most reports are still between 20 and 30 pounds.
Reports on flounder show signs of summer as some fish over 5 pounds are being caught near the islands of the CBBT, mainly around the 1st and 2nd islands.
Sheepshead are showing up at the CBBT area, as well as some rockfish still biting, with good reports coming from the islands of the CBBT.
