CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Historic District Review Board approved three applications for Certificates of Appropriateness and denied one during its regular meeting on May 19.
Board members approved a request for property identified as Tax Map No. 83A3-1-563A on Mason Avenue to install two accessory structures associated with a commercial use.
The board also approved plans for a home at 614 Peach Street that include replacing existing doors and windows, constructing a rear porch, and building a side addition with an additional rear porch.
At 520 Strawberry Street, the board approved modifications to a previously approved Certificate of Appropriateness involving changes to siding and a chimney.
One application was denied. The board rejected a proposal for 300 Strawberry Street that sought permission to install vinyl soffit on roof eaves and cover existing wood roof trim with aluminum. According to meeting records, the application was denied because it did not comply with Section 5.4.1(2)(d) of the Cape Charles Historic District Overlay Design Guidelines, which govern appropriate materials and treatments within the town’s historic district.
The Historic District Review Board is responsible for reviewing exterior alterations, new construction and other projects within Cape Charles’ historic district to ensure proposed changes are consistent with the town’s preservation standards and architectural character.
The decisions come as Cape Charles continues to implement updates to its historic district regulations aimed at balancing property improvements with preservation of the town’s historic appearance.
