When I worked in DC, we never went out to lunch at a sit down place. Instead, we just said, “Let’s go down to the trucks.” The trucks of course were the lines of food trucks all along the sidewalk, selling everything from gourmet hot dogs to Thai to Punjabi. It was the perfect solution for web developers working 15 hour days…delicious meals at a reasonable price and served on the go.
JUM JUM by Rachel Savage and Khyber Rooney-Rabdau is bringing some of that excitement back to Cape Charles’ cuisine, a welcome change from fast food chains on the highway, and more convenient for those that don’t have an hour to break and relax for lunch…because we’re working.
So why fall in love with JUM JUM? There are many reasons. You don’t have to leave your comfort zone by going to a restaurant surrounded by stuffy people. You don’t have to wait for a seat, or be ill-treated by the food server staff, and you don’t have to pay a big bill.
Street Food is the Best
But even more than convenience, JUM JUM is a paradigm shift in our Town’s cuisine. They are creative and inventive chefs that know how to elevate street food to an exciting, high end experience. The tacos and burritos, whether pork, chicken or shrimp are delicious, fresh and made to order, topped with local fresh vegetables (avocado is extra), and a mouthwatering mango chili salsa. My favorite, the rice bowl is a smorgasbord of flavor, and you can go totally vegan, or add the meat of your choice. Also, don’t miss the Cuban sandwich when it is available, a unique take on the traditional Tampa Cuban, with pork, ham, swiss cheese and JUM JUM’s special sauce.
Another advantage to JUM JUM is that the platform is very agile; Rachel and Khyber can change up their menus based on what is fresh and available, or if they feel inspired to try something new. Unlike a traditional brick and mortar, where the chefs may be buried back in the kitchen, JUM JUM is a face to face operation, able to get feedback and quickly adjust the menu to meet the customer’s desire.
JUM JUM is an easy and inexpensive way to be adventurous, to try new foods, new ingredients and new takes on traditional dishes. With JUM JUM right on Mason Avenue in the old Birdies Putt Putt lot, you no longer have to cross the bay to Ghent or VB for an exotic or ethnic meal. Also, if you want a late night snack, or have the munchies after a hard night of partying at the Pub or Shanty, JUM JUM is open Saturday late night 12:30-2:30AM serving signature tacos and burritos.
