Letter to the Mirror by Betty Mariner
National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week is September 26 through October 1, 2016. Adult Education services on the Eastern Shore of Virginia are provided by Eastern Shore Community College’s Adult Education Center and the Eastern Shore Literacy Council both located on ESCC’s campus.
Between these two organizations, over 300 adult learners were served for the 2015-16 fiscal year in classes as far north as Arcadia High School in Oak Hall and as far south as Kiptopeke Elementary School in Cape Charles. Classes address the needs of learners who need to improve basic skills, earn the GED®, improve skills needed for entry into college or learn English as a Second Language. In addition to the 26 classes offered by both organizations, 18 volunteer tutors served 31 learners through the Eastern Shore Literacy Council.
In recognition of Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, ESCC’s Adult Education Center and Eastern Shore Literacy Council will be open the evening of September 27 from 5-7 p.m. Please come to the Adult Education Center located at Eastern Shore Community College or Kiptopeke Elementary School for program information. ESCC’s Adult Education program will be offering free GED® Ready practice tests at both locations to anyone interested in learning more about the GED® test. Light refreshments will be provided.
Adult Education is a needed service on the Eastern Shore and the efforts of both ESCC’s Adult Education Center and Eastern Shore Literacy Council allow adults to improve skills necessary for employment, job advancement and post-secondary and workforce education.
We hope to see you on Tuesday, September 27.
