  1. Thank you Cape Charles for your consideration of the businesses in town who rely on the tourist season to make their year. We pay rent all year, taxes all year, electric and water all year, insurance all year, not just seasonally. I suppose I’m not as business savy as all of you, but please explain how the town benefits by collecting less tax from established businesses whose incomes drop because of the added competition at the beach. Why will guests want to come to town when they can stay at the beach and eat and shop? If you think these street vendors will pay their fair share of taxes, I have a bridge I’d like to sell you. Oh I forgot, food vendors only need a peddler’s license, no need to pay meal taxes. How is this fair?

  2. Good points, Kathy Weiner. I would like answers to these questions as well. Also, in response to Buchholz’ statement that vendors would also have to pay a meal tax to the town, Keith Kostek said “. . . that a cart vendor would not be able to understand sales tax.” What does that mean?

  3. Who will decide which vendors are approved? How many sites will be designated for individual vendors given the limited space on Bay Avenue? On prime days there are very few spaces available. Why shouldn’t the cart vendors pay taxes to the town like everyone else? Who will ensure the proper health standards are maintained? Seems like there should be a lot more discussion and a public hearing before any voting occurs.

Note: The Planning Commission is still working this issue, and there are many details to be worked out. The PC has been fairly careful and diligent in its efforts thus far.
