NASSAWADOX, Va. — A free one-day sports clinic for children with special needs will be held Friday, Aug. 16, at Randy Custis Memorial Park in Nassawadox.
The event, open to elementary, middle, and high school students, will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and offer inclusive coaching in soccer, wrestling, and flag football. Organizers say the clinic aims to empower children with special needs through sports while providing caregivers with tools and support.
The program is hosted by Youth With a Mission Bridge Network Eastern Shore and will focus on what organizers call “fun, patience and passion,” emphasizing skill-building in each sport. Siblings are encouraged to participate, and free lunch will be provided.
Coach Reynolds, a licensed counselor for about 25 years who currently serves in Norfolk’s public school system, will lead the camp. He will be joined by a team of Tidewater-area coaches trained to work with special needs children. The day will begin with a motivational talk, followed by presentations from representatives of organizations that serve families with special needs children, including the Special Olympics.
Participants will rotate through wrestling, soccer and flag football sessions, with an emphasis on skill-building and drills rather than competition. Free lunch will be provided, and siblings are encouraged to join.
If it rains, all activities will move indoors to the park’s gym. Space is limited, and advance registration is required.
