A simple records request turned into a meaningful reunion with a moment of heroism from Cape Charles’ recent past.
Cape Charles Town Clerk Libby Hume recently received a request from a U.S. Coast Guardsman who had been stationed in Cape Charles from 2014 to 2016. The serviceman was seeking a copy of a Certificate of Commendation presented by Town Council in July 2015 after he and another Coast Guardsman rescued a drowning boy off the town beach in June of that year.
Hume said she was able to locate the original file and provide the certificate, which the Coast Guardsman plans to include in his application for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Chief Warrant Officer program. He is currently stationed in Guam.
Shortly afterward, Hume received a second request for the other Coast Guardsman’s commendation certificate and was able to provide that document as well.
The effort highlighted the dedication, professionalism, and care Libby brings to her role as Town Cleark. It also highlights the importance of maintaining accurate municipal records and preserving moments of local history that continue to carry significance years later.
