Cleanliness, lack of repairs, failing equipment and empty slips continue grease the Town Harbor’s precipitous slide into the abyss. To meet the challenge, the top boating minds in Cape Charles, which comprises the Harbor Focus Group, have finalized their priority list for the next season.
The top priority is to “establish a calmer safer marina”. According to the group, the best way to accomplish this is to build yet another breakwater/barrier between the bay and harbor, and to also construct a fixed wall or a wave attenuator.
The wall will cost the harbor depth and slips. It will be constructed of poured concrete and stabilization rock—this will require the harbor to forfeit some dock space and water depth for deep draft vessels utilizing the outer births. The wave attenuator is a concrete floating dock 10’ to 14’ wide.
The town has contacted Bellingham Marine and SF Marina and discussed wave attenuation products. The town is hoping to have some kind of plan in place so that it can submit a Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG) by September.
