987 people were shot and killed by Police in 2017

The Washington Post crime database reports that 987 people have been shot and killed by police in 2017. Of that number, 457 were white (46%) and 223 where black (23%).

The data also showed that mental illness played a part in 223 of the deaths.

326 (33%) were under thirty years of age.

940 were males, while 45 were female.

Note: There were some gaps, where some data is listed as ‘unknown’.

68 of the victims were unarmed. 579 involved guns, 156 involved knives. 26 involved toy weapons, while 85 involved vehicles.

182 were killed fleeing the scene in a car. 124 were killed fleeing on foot.

In 2015, the Washington Post began tracking more than a dozen details about each killing — including the race of the deceased, the circumstances of the shooting, whether the person was armed and whether the person was experiencing a mental-health crisis — by culling local news reports, law enforcement websites and social media, and by monitoring independent databases such as Killed by Police and Fatal Encounters. The Post conducted additional reporting in many cases.
