1 thought on “Meeting Workforce Needs on the Shore

  1. One of the few legislations Gov. Northam has touted and passed that I like is the incentives plan for businesses to relocate to rural areas. This relieves congestion in crowded areas and would relieve pressure on their infrastructure. The proverbial win, win for those areas. We could add another win for us to that equation if any business were to relocate here.
Of the 3 groups listed that would be important to fuel the fusion of our local workforce to any new business, I would think they have different jobs. The ESCC would be able to react relatively quickly and start a new program or 3 to help train employees for any new arriving business. The business would bring it’s core of employees, and the school could/would train new ones.
The statement in this article’s opinion, that we have 647 people looking for work is skewed and ignores a seriously large factor. That is all the underemployed folks with p/t jobs are a HUGE INVENTORY of folks who would seek better f/t employment. There is nothing parents here on The Shore would love more than to have a steady 40 hr. work week with weekends off and no rotating shifts. No ? What a HUGE perk that would be for so many trying to build personal and family lives. People would seriously compete for those jobs for sure.
The other 2 groups mentioned here, I would think, would and should have a completely different part in this action. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce and The Accomack-Northampton Planning District Commission would, and should be, finding ways to help attract those businesses that are looking to relocate, or could be attracted to. Since our Gov. Ralph has passed this legislation, does anyone know how our Chamber of Commerce and Planning Commission have been working with The Commonwealth hierarchy to bring new business here ? What is their plan ? Have they met with folks from the gov. office? Have they been actively pursuing businesses to come here ? I would think our Commonwealth government would pass such legislation, not out of a pie dream, but because they knew of businesses that were interested in such an idea. Does that seem reasonable ? What businesses are on that list and who are our local leaders courting to come here ?
In closing, I don’t think this politics at all. This is business planning 101. It’s only politics if the initial legislation was passed to mislead us. So where are we in all this ?
