VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Today, Congresswoman Luria released the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s opinion regarding Bostock v. Clayton County, Altitude Express v. Zarda, and R.G. and G.R. Harris Funeral Homes v. EEOC cases, which affirmed that firing an employee due to their sexual orientation or gender identity is prohibited under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.
“No one should be discriminated against at their workplace because of their sexual orientation or gender identity, and today’s Supreme Court ruling affirmed this essential right,” said Congresswoman Elaine Luria. “I hope this decision serves as a powerful precedent for the LGBTQ+ community to receive equal protection under the law. While this is an important step toward equality, there is more work to do to ensure the entire LGBTQ+ community obtains protection from discrimination throughout our society.”
