Northampton Schools Expand Face-to-Face Learning

At its peak last spring, more than one billion students around the world were impacted by school and college shutdowns. Today, millions of US schoolchildren remain at home, as teacher unions in many areas of the country continue to block school reopening plans.

Northampton County Schools has announced some changes in the schedule which will add additional in-person days for some students.

On Monday, March 22^nd, Northampton’s fourth graders will be returning to four days a week “face to face” instruction.

The message said Northampton Schools will be expanding face-to-face offerings in other grades in the near future.

Currently, only about half of all US students are attending traditional, in-person schooling and many parents have had enough. A neighbor contacted me just last week to say that she is done with Zoom schooling and halting district reopening plans. She is removing her child from public school to homeschool this spring and will enroll her in a private school in the fall.

This trend is likely to continue, particularly with fall schooling plans far from certain. As the New York Times reported last week: “Now many parents are beginning to rebel, frustrated with the pace of reopening and determined to take matters into their own hands. Some are making contingency plans to relocate, home-school or retreat to private education if their children’s routines continue to be disrupted this fall — a real possibility as some local school officials and teachers’ unions argue for aggressive virus mitigation measures to continue, potentially even after educators are vaccinated.”
