The Academy for Lifetime Learning is pleased to announce the award of three $2000 scholarships to outstanding local 2024 high school graduates. The scholarship checks were presented at the Academy’s annual meeting at the Historic Onancock School.
The Betty Ross Nursing Scholarship, named after the founder of the Academy, was awarded to Arcadia High School graduate Akhyah Collins, who plans to pursue an RN nursing career. She will attend Howard University in Washington DC. Kyli Hewett, also a graduate of Arcadia, is an aspiring pilot who plans a career in aviation. She will attend Averett University. The third scholarship was awarded to Joel Robinson, a graduate of Northampton High School. He plans to study music education at Virginia Commonwealth University.
To be considered for a scholarship, applicants were required to present their academic transcripts, submit a list of their community and scholastic activities, write two essays, and provide proof of acceptance at a two or four-year college or university.
The Academy for Lifetime Learning is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization whose members share a love of learning. Funds raised by the group’s semester membership fee are used to award scholarships to graduates of Eastern Shore high schools every year. Since its inception in 2013, the Academy’s scholarship program has handed out over $37,000.
