CAPE CHARLES, Va. — National Oyster Week is set to bring a tide of excitement to surrounding regions from August 5-11. This celebration will feature oyster specials and events across Maryland, D.C., Virginia, and beyond. Numerous restaurants will offer shucking classes, specialty recipes, and discounted prices on all your favorite oyster dishes to encourage everyone to enjoy the Bay’s hardest worker.
National Oyster Week is an initiative led by the Oyster Recovery Partnership (ORP), an organization dedicated to environmental restoration. The ORP collaborates with the Shell Recycling Alliance to ensure that used oyster shells from restaurants are returned to the Bay. Remarkably, a single reclaimed shell can support over ten juvenile oysters. To date, the ORP has planted nearly 230,000 bushels of recycled oyster shells on public oyster bars in Maryland.
The week-long festivities highlight the significance of oysters to the Chesapeake Bay’s ecosystem and promote sustainability through shell recycling efforts. Residents and visitors can look forward to a variety of engaging and educational activities that celebrate the vital role oysters play in the local environment and economy.
This event offers a unique opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy delicious seafood, and support efforts to preserve and enhance the Chesapeake Bay’s oyster population.
