CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Cape Charles Treasurer’s Office reported a productive week of professional development, financial management system updates, and enhanced internal controls, reflecting its commitment to improving the town’s financial operations.
Two team members attended the Virginia Government Finance Officers Association (VGFOA) conference in Charlottesville, focusing on best practices and bridging the rural-urban financial gap. Insights from the event will be shared with the department in the coming weeks.
The office also made significant strides in operational priorities:
- Tax Data Conversion: The financial management system provider is set to complete the tax data file conversion early next week, allowing for the generation and mailing of personal property tax bills. A decision on extending the due date will follow guidance from the Town Manager.
- Real Estate Tax Inquiries: The department responded to over 50 inquiries about 2024 real estate tax bills, marking the highest volume of communication this year.
- Unclaimed Property: The 2024 unclaimed property process was completed and remitted to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Banking Transition: The ongoing transition to Taylor Bank continued smoothly.
Internal controls received a boost through an overhaul of the town’s credit card program, introducing stricter use and documentation requirements. The department is also finalizing a standardized NSF (bad check) policy, with recommendations to be presented to the Town Manager soon.
In other updates, the Treasurer participated in a demonstration of short-term rental and business licensing software with the Zoning Administrator. Additionally, the town’s procurement process underwent a review to better align with Cape Charles’ size and needs.
The Finance Department continues its community-focused service by offering extended hours: Saturday service on Nov. 16 and 23 (9 a.m.–1 p.m.) and evening hours on Dec. 4 and 5 (until 7 p.m.).
“We’re working to improve access, streamline processes, and strengthen financial oversight,” the Treasurer said, emphasizing the department’s dedication to serving Cape Charles residents effectively.
