VDOT Proposes Median Crossover Changes on Route 13 in Northampton County

CAPE CHARLES, Va. — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has announced proposed plans to modify median crossovers along a stretch of Route 13 (Lankford Highway) in Northampton County in an effort to enhance safety and improve traffic flow.

The project, which extends from just north of Capeville Drive to slightly north of Arlington Road/Custis Tomb Road, includes the closure of three existing median crossover openings, the extension of two existing left-turn lanes on Route 13 north, and the addition of a new median crossover left-turn lane for Route 13 south near the intersection at Sawmill Lane.

According to VDOT, the changes align with recommendations from the Route 13/Wallops Island Access Management Study, STARS Route 13 (Lankford Highway) Corridor Improvement Study, and the Eastern Shore Safety Study. Officials say the modifications aim to reduce crash risks and accommodate future traffic demands in the region.

Project information and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) document, classified as a Programmatic Categorical Exclusion (PCE), are available for review at VDOT’s Hampton Roads District Office in Suffolk and at the Accomac Residency Office. Residents are encouraged to call ahead to ensure staff availability for inquiries.

VDOT has stated it is willing to hold a public hearing if requested. To request a hearing, residents must submit written requests to Jeffrey Thurston, Project Manager at AECOM, by February 28, 2025. Should a hearing be scheduled, details on the date, time, and location will be announced.
